The Augusta News-Review - December 20, 1973 Murphy, Swift And Gallagher Named To Top UNCF Posts In ’74 Campaign NEW YORK—Thomas A Murphy of General Motors Corp., A. Dean Swift of Sears, Roebuck and Co., and Dr. Buell G. Gallagher, former president of the City College of New York, were named today to top leadership positions in the United Negro Fund’s 1974 drive. Mr. Murphy, Vice Chairman of the Board of GM, will be the UNCF National Campaign Chairman. He succeeds Cyrus R. Vance, who has been nominated to a seat on the Fund’s board of directors. Mr. Swift, president of Sears, will take over as Chairman of the National Corporations Committee. Mr. Murphy held that post in 1973. Dr. Gallagher, who was also president of one of the UNCF institutions, Talladega College in Alabama from 1933 to 1943, will serve sa Chairman of the Foundations Fund-Raising Committee for the fourth straight year. Announcement of the appointments was made today by Morris B. Abram, UNCF Chairman of the Board, and Dr. Herman H. Long, President of the Fund. Mr. Abram, who practices law in New Yor, is the former president of Brandeis University. Dr. Long is the current president of Talladega College. Christopher F. Edley, UNCF executive director, said he and the staff were “immensely pleased” at the op-level volunteer leadership lined up to work ing the coming campaign. “With the cooperation of men such as these I am sure the UNCF will have the best year in its history,” Mr. Edley said. The UNCF raises operating revenues for its 41 private, predominately Black member colleges. Thirty-nine of them are four-year, fully-accredited institutions. Atlanta U. and the ' Interdenominational Theological Center are graduate schools. A goal for the 1974 UNCF campaign has not yet been set. Save Money - This Christmas . . . Make Your Decorations! Leave 1 inch unsewn for stuffing; once stuffed, close seam and finish in chain stitch. Add felt facial features and string embroidery yarn to form loop for hanging. Felt Candy Cane - This candy cane is done up in bright felt and trimmed in shiny metallic braid. Trace shape and cut 2. Cut a 3-inch long strip of hanging. Glue cand cane together l A inch from edge placing felt loop at top. Trim with self-sticking trimming. Felt House - The felt house is a half-pint milk carton. Glue red felt to the top of carton, and green felt to sides and bottom. From green felt, cut rectangles to form door and windows; glue on. Apply gold trim around door and windows. Frame house top and sides in gold braid. Cone Angel - Start with a semi-circle of heavy paper; cut blue felt to shape and glue on paper. Add 2 rows of seif-sticking lace trim. Roll into cone shape, glueing 2 overlapping edges together. Cut off tip of cone; glue on styrofoam ball. Add felt facial features and cotton for hair. Form pipe cleaner wings and halo and glue securely to center back. Cut arms out of felt and glue onto cone. Glittery Ball - Divide styrofoam ball down center. Spiral Self-adhesive gold fringe on each side of center. Glue together with fringe ends at center In 1972, the UNCF raised sll.l million which included one-time legacies totalling $687,000. The 1973 drive is not yet complete. He was a lieutenant, J.G., in the Navy during World War 11. Mr. Swift is also an alumnus of the University of Illinois, Class of 1940. He joined Sears as a salesman that year. After service in World War II with the field artillery in Europe, Mr. Swift came back to Sears and began his move up through the ranks. On Feb. 1, 1973, he assumed the presidency of the company, the 11th man to hold that post since its founding in 1886. Dr. Gallagher holds degrees from Carleton College, Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University. He also has received more than a dozen honorary doctorate degrees.
