For these gifts
we thank you, Lord
The Pilgrims set aside a day for Thanksgiving. We grateful heirs can say amen
to their prayer. Anxious in a time of violence and discord, we may reflect that
our forefathers carried their firearms with them into the fields. \ iolence and
fear are with us yet. So too is the Lord’s bounty. Working together in peace we
can multiply His gifts. For surely non-violence is a realizable goal. Individuals
and communities have achieved it. Perhaps one day nations will. Get together
with your family, friends, neighbors, or co-workers to discuss the problems of
violence and how you can work together to help solve them. For a helptul dis

Black Detroit Mayor Tells
Criminals 'Hit The Road’
k-M
Mayor Coleman Young
Detroit-Coleman Young,
the first Black mayor of
Detroit, began his
administration with a blunt
warning to the criminals who
have given Detroit its bad
image. “Hit the road for Eight
Mile”, he ordered them as the
crowd of 4,000 people at his
inauguration came roaring to
its feet. Eight mile road is the
city limits.
An unprecedented show of
cooperation took place when
for the first time in Detroit
history, 3500 representatives
of business and labor
sponsored a luncheon in
Young’s honor, with Henry
Ford II and Leonard
Woodcock, president of UAW,
sharing speaker’s duties with
Governor Milliken, Roman
Gibbs, the outgoing mayor,

was the master of ceremonies.
Governor Milliken said he had
already been collared by
Young for a larger slice of the
state’s portion of revenue
sharing for Detroit.
Henry Ford said that it is
“time to stop knocking and
start selling Detroit”. It was
Woodcock who made the most
pointed case for support when
he said, “Democracy works
when citizens come together in
what sometimes seems a
magical consensus. We have no
alternative but to save our
cities. The energy crisis has
proved that they are the
future. There can be no
suburbs without a viable urban
center”.
One of the highlights of the
inaugural festivities was the
inaugural concert featuring the
Detroit symphony orchestra
and former Motown Supreme
singing star Diana Ross.
