Billy Preston, Rodney Rippy
Record Funky Nursery Rhyme
Billy Preston & Rodney
Allen Rippy have combined
talents to record a funky
nursery rhyme on A&M label
entitled “Cuttin’ Loose With
Mother Goose”. It was a
chance for a former child
prodigy to get together with a
current one. The resulting 45
RPM single is bound to be a
smash!
A few years ago, Billy
Preston was playing the piano
with accomplishment at the
age of three. Today, he
continues to prosper and grow
in the grand manner of a rock
star. “Space Race”, a recent hit
angle for Billy is now a gold
record. “You’re So Unique”,
his current original release
promises to be a hit as well. In
fact, several songs from the
“Everybody Likes Some Kind
Os Music” album are getting air
play across the country.
On the other hand, at the
tender age of five, Rodney
Allen Rippy is one of the most
exciting phenomena in the
entertainment industry. He has
been signed to play “Leroy” in
Chocolate Chip Productions
motion picture “Stagolee”
which will be filmed in
Georgia, and was also featured
in Mel Brooks’ production of
“Blazing Saddles” with
Cleavon Little. Keep an ear out
for the hit-bound sound of
Billy and Rodney due for
release in the next few months.

L.T.D. stretched across the
A&M sound stage, hesitating
only long enough to let the
applause die down. Then
‘‘Onion’’ Miller,
singer/saxophonist of the
group, stepped up to the mike
and announced in his raspy
voice, “This song is for all free
folks”. As the music filled the
empty space above the
crowded room, people began
clapping and snapping. The
group clearly generates an
excitement and high energy
level with the help of lead
singer/drummer Jeff Osborne
and lovely lady Celeste Cole.
The horn players are high
steppers and fully supportive
with good quality sound, flash
of brass and occasional
background singing.
Jerry Butler flew in from his
Chicago offices to introduce
his group, then stood by
beaming as they captured the
imaginatic.i of the audience
with professional rock and
soul.
All in all, the L.T.D. evening
of showcase was a success, but
then, how can you lose with a
name like LOVE,
TOGETHERNESS AND
DEVOTION?

Beauty talk with the Stars
Ka
LESLIE UGGAMS - “There is such a thing as natural
beauty, but to keep it you have to work at it.”
NANCY WILSON - “1 don’t need to look younger. I
know how old I am and I like it. I want to be what I
am.”
Did you know' that as a
child, Cicely Tyson, Academy
Award Nominee co-star of
“Sounder” was a string-bean
with short, coarse hair, and was
considered unattractive? Or
that Leslie Uggams, who
started in television at age six,
had her greatest problem with
makeup because there were
almost no colors for Black
people in those days? And,
Denise Nicholas, “Room 222”
star, was frustrated when she
tried to break into commercials
because everyone was looking
for Black girls with Afros and
she had straight hair?
In the January Essence
Beauty Annual, West coast
editor, Liz Gant, interviews
five prominent Black actresses
for an inside look at how they
visualize themselves as
“beauties”, and finds out more
about how they got that way.
Leslie Uggams recalls that
back in the Mitch Miller days,
Blacks tried to look as white as
possible and she was constantly
straightening her hair.
Eventually it broke off, and
she went through six years of
wigs - day and night. But now
she conditions her hair with
mayonnaise and wraps it in
Saran Wrap, and it’s naturally
healthy and beautiful. Nancy
Wilson always beautifully
coiffed, does her own hair.
“Going to strange beauticians
on the road all the time really
started it,” she says. And, I can
do my own hair much more
simply and faster at home.”
Cicely Tyson maintains, “I’m a
great advocate of choice. If
you want to straighten your
hair, do it. Whatever you want
to do, do, it, if it works for
you. I’m a person of many
moods. Sometimes I just
decide I want to look a certain
way and feel I’m entitled. I
have never been one to follow
fashion. I have always been one
to follow the dictates of my
own mind. I shaved my head
ten years ago in New York
when it wasn't fashionable, and
then just last year, I wore a
Marcelle to the Academy
Awards because of the type of
gown I wore.”
Hairstyle is a very individual
thing, is the same true with
makeup?
“Yes”, says Denise Nicholas.
“1 don’t like a lot of makeup;
and it really does ruin your
skin, especially when you’re
working under hot lights.”
Leslie used to live in makeup,
“I believed that since 1 was in
the public eye that was the
thing to do. Now, I like the
least amount of makeup,
except when I’m doing a
concert or night club date. I
think the eyes are important. If
the eyes are right, then you’re
OK.’’
What about a beauty
regime? Judy Elder finds the
smog in Los Angeles a
detriment to her skin and
suggest this cleansing method.
“I use a facial sauna. I have dry
skin, but the area around my
nose can be oily. I do my own
facial mask by mixing an egg
white and honey. First, I wash
with soap and water and then
with witch hazel. Next, 1 put
on the egg white and honey
and leave that on for about 10
to 15 minutes until it’s really
hard, and then use a lemon half
to wipe it off. Finally, I rinse
with vinegar. Doing that about
once every two weeks keeps
my skin really clean and soft.”
Leslie Uggams has her own
routine. “Every morning when
I get up 1 give my skin a
treatment and again at night
and I always apply oil around
my eyes at night because that
keeps the lines away. Then, at
least twice a week, I use a
mask. I whip up avacados in a
blender and put it on my face
and let it harden. The problem
with most women is that we
wear makeup but don’t know

CICELY TYSON - “If you are at peace with yourself,
that in itself is a beauty that’s lasting.”
how to clean it off - and that’s
where most of the damage is
done. Toom many of us don’t
watch our diets either. Finally,
it’s not a bad idea to visit a
good dermatologist, even if
only once, to find out what
YOUR skin is really like.”
For Nancy there is simply,
“soap and water.” “No night
cream; no moisturizer; no
nothing,” she insists. “It costs
very little to be beautiful. I
think we’re too swayed by
fads. Someone over 30 or 35
shouldn’t be doing all that. I
want to be what 1 am.”
On diet and weight, the stars
are as varied in outlook as they
are in style. Denise comments,
“when I’m working I try not to
The Augusta News-Review - February 7, 1974 -
eat any sweats at all. But
really, the best thing
is a very balanced diet: meat,
vegetables, fresh fruit. 1 don’t
drink hard liquor. I drink dry
wine and a lot of water. I must
exercise. My problem spots are
my hips and thighs. 1 try to do
those health club exercises but
can’t keep them up for longer
than a week.” Judy Elder tries
to keep herself in shape at all
times. “I tend to have a weight
problem. But I’ve found that
the healthiest attitude for me
to have is that when there is
something in particular that I
must do, then I can diet but
not be obsessed by it. Whatever
you do, it should fit your
lifestyle.” Leslie, on the other

hand, does the opposite. “If I
have to go out to dinner. I
starve all day. When you get
past 25, you’ve got to
re-routine yourself. I try to
stick to a protein diet when
I’m on the road. I’m really
strict with myself. A lot of
protein and salads.” Cicely’s
philosophy is, “fast once a
week; drink water every two
hours and eat nothing until the
next morning. Fresh vegetables
are also very important. I eat
most of them raw. 1 get most
of my protein from nuts; 1 eat
about eight or nine ounces a
day. Finally, I run three miles
every day. I have a lot of
nervous energy to begin with
so 1 run to bum off thee excess
It open up my head and makes
it easier for me to solve any
problems that I might have.”
Nancy’s eating habits are
unique. “1 never had a hunger
pang until 1 was 28. I was too
thin. 1 had no weight to lose,
but I would lose when I was on
the road. Eventually, it just got
to be too much. When my
condition was diagnosed it was
my thyroid. I was ill for weeks
and started eating ten times a
day.” She concludes, “no
matter what you do to be
beautiful, if you do not like
yourself, then the rest of your
life is going to be nothing.”
Cicely Tyson, who grew from
an “ugly stringbean” into one
of the most beautiful stars in
Hollywood’s galaxy has tlie
final work ... “Beauty is a very
personal thing. Suddenly, we
recognize that we are beautiful,
that we as a race are the only
people on the face of the earth
who run the gamut of colors,
emotions and possibilities. If
'we' are beautiful, how can I
help but be!”
