For some 23 years, it was his responsibility, among other things, to see that the clock in the tower of Haygood Hall (destroyed by fire in 1968) kept the correct time. He used to wind the landmark clock with a lever until it was converted to an electrical system. Then the clock was often struck by lightning and he’d have to go up and reset it. A soft-spoken man, Mr. Thomas smiles easily and talks freely. Commenting on changes he has seen in the college over the years, he said, “I have seen the college grow from nothing to something.” He remembers when the registrar's office, the president’s office, the business office, the library, and almost all the classes were taught in Haygood Hall. He had to sweep all four floors of the building for 23 years. The destruction of the building took away a part of him. He says, “That building was just like home to me.” Os the changes he has seen at Paine he is most disturbed by the attitudes of students toward their work and toward their teachers. In the old days if a student didn’t do his work, his parents came to the school” including a $19,821 grant to the Sheriffs Department for reduction of property crimes, and an SII,OBO grant to the county for corrections. The McDuffie County Sheriffs Department has been funded $17,670 for an assistant district attorney, according to the report, and the Wilkes County Sheriffs Department has been funded $25,704 for two programs-reduction of property crimes, $10,071; and drug abuse enforcement and prevention, $ 15,633. AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER stripped him, and wore him out.” Or Mr. (Lawrence) Harper or Miss (Emma C.) Gray sent the students home. The teachers are to blame, too. Mr. Thomas is critical of teachers who mingle and socialize with their students. He warns, “If you play with a puppy, he’ll lick your mouth.” Although Mr. Thomas had only four years of elementary schooling, and an additional four years of night school, he is articulate. He is vice-president of the Windamar Club, an organization of Paine College maintenance workers who give a portion of each pay check to provide scholarship aid for deserving students at Paine College. In addition to giving SISOO in scholarship money, the club gave over S6OO to “Build It Back.” He is a deacon at the Antioch Baptist Church where he has been a member for 59 years. He is married to Mrs. Mattie Thomas and they have one daughter, Mrs. Daisy Quinn, of 1722 Douglas Street. Mr. Thomas explains his long life and vitality with the simple summation, “I always eat and sleep in the same place.” No one working at Paine College was there when George Thomas began. He has watched students come and go through the college from Dr. Peters to Dr. Pitts and beyond. And he’ll soon be 88. When will he retire? He says, “Oh, I plan to retire someday. When I do, it will be when 1 won’t be able to do anything at all.” Public Service Announcement Less than a week remains for prospective teachers who plan to take the National Teacher Examinations at Augusta College on July 20 to submit their registrations for these tests to Educational Testing Service, Princeton, N.J. The print-out tells the programmer if all facts and figures are correct before release to the user or customer. BARBERTON, OHIO- A former Augustan and graduate of Paine College uses a computer in helping to build some of the world’s largest boilers. In the job with Babcock & Wilcox’ Power Generation Group in Barberton, Ohio, Fillingame similates the building of a boiler on a computer. In fact, the programs he writes amount to building a boiler for the people in the estimating department. Fillingame got into this key position when he was recruited on the Paine Campus by B&W in 1969. A native of Cutbert, Georgia he came to Augusta after graduating from Henderson High there in 1965. After completing the Babcock & Wilcox Companj' - wide orientation program he was advanced in July 1969 to computer programmer coder. He later was advanced to his present position. Fillingame writes these specifications into a program tor the computer. Included in the program is the approximate cost estimate based on variables such as types of fuel, and temperatures. Also included in the program is information on overhead crane lifting capacities and shipping limits of railroad cars-details which help insure smooth work flow through the shops. “Before the first weld is made in the shop, the computer has built the entire boiler,” said Fillingame. “It has determined how much steel will be needed, how many welds will be made, and how long each weld will take a man to make. The computer provides a pretty reliable estimate of what it will cost B&W to build a boiler. “B&W has been using computers for estimating procedure,” explained Fillingame. “Without the computer it would take too long and the customer can’t wait.” Fillingame is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Choice Fillingame, Sr., Cuthbert, Georgia. He is married to the former Janie Lewis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Lewis, Sr., Americus, Georgia. The Fillingames have one child; Floyd Jansen, two years old and reside at 1358 Hartford Avenue, Akron. Ohio.
