ASTROLOGY FDR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 1-7:
ARIES (March 2f-April 20) - Someone who does not realize your
difficulties may think you are taking it too easy with the job. It
might be just as well to quit and go where you are more
appreciated, your troubles bett# understood.
TAURUS (April 21-May 20) - Keep associations on the proper
plane this week; do not mingle with those who are not of your
same background or a very similar one. You could find that
anything else is entirely undesirable and in the end could do you
harm.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21) - You can be in one of the “down
periods now and find life almost intolerable. Your work is hard,
the boss doesn’t seem to care and your take-home pay doesn’t
seem worth it. Be very cautious what measures you take against
such feelings.
CANCER (June 22 - July 22) - Avoid rush. The major danger of
health now is running around recklessly or letting yourself be
driven by an inconsiderate family urge to keep on the go. You
need to relax, lie in the sun, but don’t do the lawn mowing. Let
someone else take over the troublesome aspects of life just now.
LEO (July 23-August 23) - This is a dangerous time, full of freak
accidents. If married recently you will find your lifemate the
biggest help possible. Avoid complaints about any of your work
though, for you really have it pretty plush and also a chance to
get ahead coming soon. •
VIRGO (August 24-September 22) - You may hear from someone
whom you would love to see. It can be a time of sad nostalgia for
you, and you can be experiencing one of the true sorrows of your
life. Unfortunately, nothing can be done about this and you are
urged to submerge the thoughts before they can grow and take
over.
LIBRA (September 23-October 22) - Someone may not have a
character to match the attractions of their outer being. Beauty
may truly be only skin deep, and maybe not that much. You
could be with someone who has charisma only and you can be
disappointed when you find it out.
SCORPIO (October 23-November 22) - Make certain that all is
safe in the home; have repairs accomplished as needed. Take good
care of your expensive items such as air conditions and other
appliances for convenience and comfort. Entertain if you wish
but make it a very small gathering.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23-December 21) - The time is not
good for your plans if they include romance or marriage. You are
best off being by yourself just now if not already married. Your
lifemate may be ill and you may have to make a sacrifice of a
personal nature due to this.
CAPRICORN (December 22-January 20) - Someone with
imaginative ideas that are all wrong may try to convince You
will remain master of your own thought and not be swayed by
foolish notions. Keep on the path of work seriously and let no
one interrupt you concerning it.
AQUARIUS (January 2LFebruary 19) - You may have happy
days and evenings in spite of working hard. You get a chance to
enjoy evenings with soft music as you wait for someone to return
from work. You’re in a Chopinesque mood and will like the faint
sadness of some music. Perhaps you know your love is not meant
to last?
PISCES (February 20-March 20) - You may have an unusual
career chance with finances higher than you are accustomed to.

Racism Against
Blacks In Baseball

White players, club owners
<and the fans are prejudiced
against Black players a
Brookings Institution study
reported.
The basic theme of the
report is that even though
Black players generally draw
higher salaries than white
players they also out perform
them by a substantial margin.
But when salaries of players of
equal ability are compared the
whites receive more than the
Blacks.
Chapter 7 is called
‘Discrimination In Color. The
Case of Baseball.’ It is a part of
a lengthy Brookings study of
the economics of professional
sports by Dr. Gerald Scully, a
professor at Southern
Methodist University in Dallas,
Texas, is an econometrician
specializing in labor matters.
Scully said that parts of the
study have been released to the
press by the Brookings
Institution at various times. He
said that he really hadn’t kept
track of them. One such article
was in the June 15th issue of
Sporting News.
The National League has
consistently had a higher
percentage of Black players
than the American League
although there is a growing
inequality in the number of
Blacks among teams within the
National League the study said.
This is one of the main
reasons the National League
have dominated the All-Star
games during the 60s and 70s
because of the dominance of
Blacks in the National League.
He didn’t go into why the
National League hired more
Blacks.
Blacks outperform whites by
a wider margin in positions
where Blacks have been the
most excluded namely the
infield, pitching and catching,
the study said. There are more
Blacks in the outfield and their
margin of superiority there is
not as great.
More Blacks were
outfielders because they did
not have the benefit while
young, of the superior
coaching needed to perform in
the infield or the battery.
Hitting came naturally along
with speed and these skills
were their entry card. Thus
they gravitated to the outfield.
Racial entry barriers still
seem to be the primary cause

study said. This may stem from
white coaches not wishing to
spend the time needed to
improve Black players’ skills
and possibly an unwillingness
to give Blacks field leadership
responsibilities, generally
limited to infielders and
catchers.
The reserve clause in
baseball which binds a player
to one team could remove
some of the salary
discrimination by giving Blacks
bargaining power but not all
discrimination.
Owners resisted hiring
Blacks after Jackie Robinson’s
entry until the 1950’s because
of economic reasons. However
when they found they could
sign Black players for smaller
bonuses and sometimes for
none they jumped on it.
Another factor in holding
down the average Black
player’s salary in relation to a
white player’s, the study said,
is that the Blacks have less
chance of making a comparable
firing in another field. He’s
more willing to play for a little
less money than a white who
can more easily go into a
none-baseball job. Which
accounts for Black players
staying in the game longer and
eventually building up their
salary levels.
Using the salary and
performance levels of the late
1960 s showed that a Black
and a white outfielder having a
slugging average of 450 the
white will make an estimated
SII,OOO more than the Black.
The difference among
infielders are somwhat less.
Although starting from a
lower basis, the study said that
Blacks average higher yearly
increases than whites as they
stay in the majors. And
eventually their salaries
converge.
Players, who become
managers usually come from
the infielders and the exclusion
sos Blacks from managerial and
coaching positions thus appears
to intimately be linked to the
under representation of Blacks
in the infield, the study said.
This under representation
-isnot connected with poorer
performance on their part, the
study said. Their performance
is in fact superior to that of
whites. The evidence points to
the conclusion that racial
