The new president of Paine College is expected to be
announced on Oct. 5, according to Dr. Daniel Collins, president
of the board of trustees.
Dr. Collins made the statement during an interview last
Sunday. The five candidates for the job were on campus Saturday
and Sunday where they met with faculty, alumni, students, and
members of the Search Committee.
The full half-hour interview with Dr. Collins will be broadcast
Sunday evening at 10 p.m. over radio station WBBQ. Interviewed by
News-Review Editor-publisher and Paine College tacultymember,
Mallory K. Millender.

DR. IVORY NELSON
Ivory V. Nelson, professor, vice-president for Research and Special
Programs at Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View, Texas was June
11, 1934 and educated at Grambling College, Grambling, Louisiana 8.5.,
January, 1959 (Magna Cum Laude - 3.56/4.00) and at the University of
Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas Ph. D- October 1963 (Summa Cum laiude -
3.71/4.00). He was in the was in the United States Air Force lor 4 years
from 1951-1955 with the rank of S/Sgt. and held top secret cryptographic
clearance.
His honors are: Omega Psi Phi Highest Freshman, 1956; T.H. Harris
Scholarships, Grambling College, 1959; Dupont Teaching Fellowhsip,
University of Kansas, 1962; Listed in American Men of Science, 1966;
Fulbright lectureship, Universidad Autonomous de Guadalarjara, 1966;

DR. N. JUDGE KING
N. Judge King, Jr. whose home is Rockville Centre, New York, is
presently at Northern Illinois University, Lowden Hall 3058. DeKalb.
His education includes a Ph.D., Howard University, Washington. D.C.
1965; M.S., Atlanta University, Atlanta. Georgia 1962; 8.5., Morehouse
College, Atlanta, Georgia 1957: Undergraduate Major: Chemistry and
Graduate Major: Physical-Organic Chemistry.
Past employment contains Academic Affairs Conference of Midwestern
Universities; Rockefeller Fellow (Sept. 1, 1973 to June 30, 1974) 1 he
AACMU is a consortium of five universities in Illinois and Indiana. Under a
frant from the Rockefeller Foundation my role is as Fellow under
resident Richard J. Nelson at Northern Illinois University . During the
academic year all phases of university administration are studied. With
cooperation from the conference director and the other college presidents 1
am spending some time at other institutions working under the President in
order to get a broader overview of college and university administration.
Special emphasis is placed on business and academic affairs; Nassau
Community College (1968 to 1973) Nassau Community Coßcgc is the
largest community college in New York State. Current enrollment exceeds
17,000 FTE. The current operating budget is more than 22 million dollars.
My positions with the college have varied from Associate Professor,
Professor, Department Chairman, and Assistant to the President. Since the
positions as Professor and Associate Professor are clear, the descriptions
given in this resume will be limited primarily to administrative experience;
Assistant to the President (July 1, 1969 to June 13. 1971) As assistant to
the President, 1 was a member of the President’s Administrative
Committee. The committee consisted of the President, three Deans, two
Associate Deans, the Director of Research and Evaluation, and the Director
of Physical Plant We met once a week and participated in all the
administrative and academic management decisions of the college.;
Chairman of the Department of Chemistry (Sept. 1968 to June 1969);
Gallaudet College (1966 to 1968) Associate Professor of Chemistry and
Director of National Science Foundation Grant to study long range
inductive effects in spirocarbinyl systems; Department of Health,
Education and Welfare - Office of Civil Rights (Summer of 1968) during
the summer of 1968, as an employee of the Department of Health,
Education and Welfare in the Office of Civil Rights, I led a team of H.E.W.

DR. VIVIAN U. ROBINSON
Vivian U. Robinson was born in Chicago, Illinois. She is married to the
Rev. J.E. Robinson, (A.8., 8.D., M.A.) Director of Student Financial Aid,
Paine College and Assistant Pastor, Trinity CME Church. She has two
daughters - Gwendolyn Joyce, A.B. from Drew University and M.A. from
University of Pittsburgh; Juanita Delores, A.B. from Ricker College,
Houlton, Maine and two grandchildren. She presently lives in Augusta.
Georgia.
Her academic training includes Lane College, A.8., Summa Cum Laude
(English); Atlanta Univeristy, M.A. (English); University of Minnesota
(additional study) (English); A&l State University (additional 'study)
(English and Education); Yale Univeristy (completed special course in
Alcohol Education); Harvard University (summer institute) (English);
University of Southern California (completed workshop in Educational
Media); University of Nebraska, Ph.D., English, 1971, Minor in Elementary
Education, graduated with highest honor of 4.0 average.
Her present positions are associate professor of English, Paine College;

Julius S. Scott, Jr.. Methodist, College Teacher, Educational

Black Group Puts Up $ 8.5 Million Motor-Hotel

recently held “Investment
Banquet”, admiring some of
the unique features of the $8.5
million “Spirit of Atlanta
Motor Hotel”. The super
structure is being developed by
Empire at 1-20 and Ashby

VERLYN BELL
Verlyn C. Bell, 35, qualified
Monday morning to seek the
7th ward school board seat
being vacated by Travis S
Barnes.
Bell, a native of Gainesville,
Georgia has been in Augusta
for the past 11 years, except
for two years in Atlanta to
attend graduate school.
He is currently employed as
executive director of
Bethlehem Community Center.
Prior to his present job. Bell
was employed by the Augusta
Youth Development Center as
a social worker with children
and director of staff
development. His first job
working with children was in
Gainesville, where he served as
a probation officer with the
Hall County Juvenile Court.
Bell, received his

Some of the hotel’s unique
features are a revolving pent
house, 300 guest rooms. 24
hour coffee shop, 300 seat
night club, a large
banquet/ballroom, many
convention facilities, a 300 car
parking deck, and above all, its

The banquet, which was
held at the Marriott Motor
Hotel, was attended by nearly
225 persons. Other participants

Supreme Fashions, the first
Black owned clothing store on
Broad St., will celebrate its
first anniversary Saturday.
But the year lias been a
difficult one.
There is stiff competition
and high overhead. But this can
be controlled by good
management, a spokesman
said.
The store has developed
what it calls a “community
merchant relationship.” In
addition to supporting church
and civic causes, it gives SSO
scholarships to all of the local
high, schools.
Manager Hartley Gibbons

Leonard E. Dawson was
awarded the doctorate degree
from Georgetown Univeristy in
August. He specialized in
Counselor education.
An Augusta native, Dawson
worked in the Richmond
County public school system
until 1969 when be became
acting-dean at Paine College. In
1970, he began work with the
UJS. Office of Education. Since
stocks and bonds. Both males
and females, registered or not
registered, are encouraged to
