H Your Questions |j
Dear Linda Keyes,
What is so harmful about
VD? If you get it won’t you
have some signs and then be
able to go and get some pills or
something? B.
Dear 8.,
The story on venereal
diseases is not a pretty one.
There are a number of these
diseases, but syphilis and
gonorrhea are the most
common and Augusta ranks
among the top ten cities in the
country in incidence of each of
these.
One of the most harmful
things about syphilis and
gonorrhea is that both may go
undetected until permanent
damage is done. In women 80%
to 90% have no symptoms
which send them to the doctor.
A woman’s best hope then, is
that her sexual partner will tell
her he is being treated for VD
and before he gets off the
phone she should ask, “Was a
culture done?” and “Who’s
treating you?”
It’s quite possible that a
male will have no symptoms
either, so he has to rely on his
partner (or partners’) sense of
responsibility or on periodic
testing. The treatment is
usually one injection.
Here are some of the
disastrous aspects of untreated
gonorrhea in the female:
1. It may go into the uterus
(womb) and tubes and cause
pelvic infections.
2. It can cause sterility
(inability to have a child),
arthritis, heart disease and
death.
3. An infected mother can
transmit it to the eyes of her
baby during delivery, causing
blindness.
In the male:

1. Gonorrhea may cause
infection in various glands of
the reproductive system.
2. It can cause sterility
(inability to father a child),
arthritis, blindness, heart
disease and death.
Syphilis can result in
blindness, insanity, paralysis,
heart disease and death.
A person can catch VD at
any age and can have both
syphilis and gonorrhea at the
same time. These diseases are
transmitted from infected
people by sexual contact, not
by door knobs, toilet seats or
dishes, nor by heavy lifting.
There is only one form of
birth control that is useful in
preventing the spread of VD
and this is the condom
(rubber). It should be used
from the start of sexual
activity.
The damage that’s done to
tissues as a result of VD can’t
be repaired, BUT VD can be
cured.
So don’t be alarmed, but if
you think you’ve been
exposed, go for testing and
treatment (which is
confidential) to one of the
following places:
1. Your private physician.
2. Richmond County Health
Department, 1001 Bailie Drive,
724-8802, Ext. 53 or 54.
3. Women’s Health Center,
1862 Central Avenue,
736-1161.

OTHER BURGLARIES
Revco Drugs, 840 Broad St.,
was robbed of S4O Thursday.
A male came to the cash
register to purchase some
candy.
After the clerk rang up the
purchase, the male then asked
for a cigarette lighter. As the
clerk turned around to get the
lighter, the male grabbed two
S2O bills from the register and
ran west on Broad Street.
Madie English of 2044
Broad St. reported to police
that an unknown male robbed
her of sls in cash Thursday.
The male cut the screen on
her back porch and unlocked
the back door with the key
that was left in the door.
The complaintant stated she
heard water running in the
kitchen and went in to see
about it. As she entered the
kitchen, the subject grabbed
her putting a knife to her
throat and cut her finger.
The male then told her he
wanted her pocketbook which
was in the bedroom. After he
recieved the pocketbook the
