Ashburn, former outfielder for
the Phildelphia Phillies, writes
a weekly baseball column for
the Philadelphia Bulletin. He
recently talked with Dick
Allen, whose contract has been
purchased by the Atlanta
Braves.
Richie Ashburn, the former
Philadelphia Phillies and New
York Mets center fielder who
now writes a weekly column
for the Philadelphia Bulletin,
recently visited Dick Allen in
connection with his newspaper
work and said Tuesday he got
the impression Allen wants to
play baseball next season.
The question is, where?
“I think he’s going to play
ball,” said Ashburn, who
considers himself and Allen

Atlanta because he could have
a great year in that park, but
he seems to think he’ll wind up
in Chicago.
Ashburn, telephoned at his
home near Philadelphia, said he
told Allen, “My gosh, Dick,
they don’t seem to want you
there.”
Allen told Ashburn,
however, that White Sox fans
picketed the Chicago ball park
when the news broke that the
power-hitting first baseman
had been peddled to the
Braves.
“He didn’t say he doesn’t
want to play in Atlanta,” said
Ashburn, “but he said he was
happy in Chicago. And the way
he talks about baseball, 1 get

Ashburn said Allen seems
unaware the deal which
brought him to the Braves is
final. Officially, his contract
was moved from the White Sox
disqualified list to the Braves’
disqualified list, that being the
status because Allen “retired”
last season but never forwarded

what I had thought, too.”
