The 'WHO’ Ladies Are
Here With Hands Stretched
Forth For Dedicated Service
By Al Irby
The National Association of
Women Helping Offenders, a
Minnesota based organization,
has established a chapter here
in Augusta. Its purpose is to
give assistance to persons
coming out of prison by
offering a variety of services to
help them re-enter society and
show with compassionate
action, that there are people
who sincerely care. These
dedicated young women are
working unselfishly in an area
that truly needs their feminine,
loving touch. Many persons,
both men and women, would
walk the road called straight,
after a prison ordeal, if there
were more agencies such as
Women Helping Offenders.
This organization offers the
newly released inmate genuine

Ms. Ida Mae Elam, founder
and chairwoman of the
national board of trustees, is
living proof that a penal
interlude is not necessarily the
end of the world. If one
possesses an indomitable spirit,
a sordid mistake in life can be a
gateway to a life of courageous
living. This organization,
Women Helping Offenders, is
bound to make a favorable
impression on our community
because of the nature of its
appeal, and its altruistic
objective. Let’s hope that
Augusta will support these
young women and make this
group a real meaningful force
in our city and county. It has

Love, Care, and Understanding.

Food Day
Observation
The FHA’ers of A.R.
Johnson Jr. High School joined
other agencies and
organizations throughout the
United States in observing
Food Day by putting focus on
hunger and nutrition.
Several hours were spent in
discussing with others the value
of good nutrition for all age
levels and trying to help
consumers understand what
they are getting for their food
dollar.
Also during the evening the
group decided to sacrifice the
cost of desserts within their
home and the money was
utilized to prepare and deliver
desserts to a home for senior
citizens and Head Start
organizations in the
community.

Linda Keyes Answers
Your Questions
Dear Miss Keyes,
Is douching any good as
birth control? How about
withdrawal?
T.
Dear T.,
No matter how quick you
are, by the time you get to the
bathroom and douche it’s
already too late. The sperm
have already been deposited
near the cervix, and may
already have had a chance to
swim into the uterus. Then
there’s always the chance that
douching actually pushes the
sperm closer to the cervical
opening. So douching is of no
use at all as a means of birth
control.
If you’re using withdrawal as
your only means of birth
control you should realize that
the first few drops of semen
may not even be felt by the
male. Also this method calls
for a great deal of self-control
which you can’t always count
on, and it limits satisfaction.
But I’ll say this for withdrawal
- if no other method is
available, it’s better than
nothing.
Dear Linda Keyes,
I think 1 might have V.D.
but I’m not sure. I’m scared to
tell my mother and I don’t
have a doctor to go to. Can
you help me?
A.
Dear A.,
First of all, don’t panic.
There is some place you can go
for help and it’s ’ free and
confidential. This menas no
one has to know about it, not
even your parents.
Both syphilis and gonorrhea
can have serious effects such as
blindness, sterility, insanity,
paralysis, heart disease - even
death. But if they’re treated
early by a doctor both can be
completely cured.
If you live in the Augusta
area you can go to the
Richmond County Health
Department, 1001 Bailie Drive,
Augusta, 724-8802, extension
53 or 54. There you will be
tested and you may not have
any venereal disease. If you do,
you will be treated and no one
has to be told.
Don’t try to treat yourself -
it’s not effective. Do notify
any sexual partner or partners
if you have V.D. so they can be
tested and treated if necessary.
