<<s SOY RICE LOAF
2 cups mashed soybeans
1 cup cooked brown rice
] cup milk (soy or dairy)
¥i cup soy cracker or soy toast crumbs
1 tbs. oil
1 tbs. powdered vegetable broth
2 tbs. minced onion
Salt as desired
Mix well, and bake in oiled loaf pan in moderate oven for
45 minutes. If desired, moisten top with a little tomato
sauce or soup. Serves 4 to 5.
SOY ROASTS AND LOAVES
There are any number of excellent soy roasts, loaves, and
meat substitute foods on the market that are tasty and
ready to use, and can be served hot or cold. The usual
method of preparation is to remove the contents from the
can by opening both ends and pushing out, then slice and
heat. The slices may be fried in oil, breaded, dipped in
eggs and fried, heated in gravy or sauce, or broiled. Sliced,
they serve as cold cuts or as sandwich fillings, and when
mashed they make good sandwich spreads. These foods
can be diced and served in cream sauce, a la king. They
are also good additions to salads.
SOYBEANS SOUTHERN STYLE
2 cups cooked soybeans
2 cups corn, canned, fresh, or frozen; preferably fresh
1 cup soy cheese
2 cups tomatoes, canned or fresh
] tsp. salt
1 scant cup lightly oiled bread crumbs
Put alternate layers of the beans, corn, soy cheese, and
drained tomatoes into a greased baking dish. Mix the salt
with the juice drained from the tomatoes and pour over
the mixture. Cover with the crumbs and bake in a moder
ate oven for 30 minutes, or until the crumbs are brown.

JERUSALEM-The Israeli
government has recognized the

The decision has been

prominent Israelis.
Although Ethiopia had
broken off diplomatic relations
with Israel during the October
1973 Mideast war, prevailing
Israeli sentiment buttressed

Dear Linda Keyes:
Will you write something
about vasectomy. Are many
people having it? How do they
do it? How does it affect you?
Does your wife have to agree
to it?
R.
Dear R.,
This is a continuation of the
last column in which we talked
about some of these questions
To summarize: 1) The only
difference in a man sexually
after a vasectomy is that he
will not be able to father a
child because the sperm (seed)
will no longer enter the semen.
In all other ways intercourse
will not be different. 2)
Millions of men in other
countries, as well as nearly a
million American men, have
had vasectomies.
This procedure takes about
20 to 30 minutes and can
usually be done in a doctor’s
office or clinic under local
anesthetic. Two small incisions
are made in the scrotum and
the two tiny tubes which carry
the sperm up into the body are
cut. The doctor usually snips a
small piece out of each tube
and ties off the cut ends. The
tubes are called vas deferens
(vasectomy = vas + ectomy,
“to cut”).
Afterwards the testes still

here in the near future in the
first of several flights
sponsored by the Jewish
Agency, the quasi-official arm
of the government in charge of
immigration.
About 150 Falashas already
live here. They have been here
since 1972 and occupy mainly
professional positions. Also,
since 1972, pressure has
mounted from their supporters
for a definitive government
position on their status.
There are an estimated
25,000 Falashas in Ethiopia,
one-third of which, experts on
Ethiopian Jewry here conclude
want to go to Israel.
The Falashas believe their
ancestors were driven by the
Romans from the area that is
now Israel. But, some experts
dispute that claim. They
contend that their ancestors
had always lived in Ethiopia
and after being exposed to
Judaism, adopted Jewish
customs and religion.
manufacture sperm but the
body absorbs them in a natural
process as it absorbs all unused
cells. The sperm makes up only
about 2 percent of the semen,
which is made in other glands.
Unless you put the semen
under a microscope you
wouldn’t be able to tell the
difference.
According to the
information I have, the consent
of the wife is required only in
Georgia, New Mexico, North
Carolina and Virginia. But it’s
better for you as a couple, if
you’re married, to decide on
this together since it’s
permanent and once it’s done
it can’t be undone.
Vasectomy does not protect
against venereal disease. The
condom and immediate
thorough cleansing are the only
things that offer any
protection against V.D.
More about vasectomy next
time.

Urban League
Puts Black
Jobless Rafe
At 25.7%
The National Urban League
has reported that the
unemployment rate for Black
people in the first three
months of the year soared to
25.7 per cent, approaching
three times the current 9.2 per
cent national unemployment
rate.
The agency’s research
department, using what it calls
its “hidden unemployment
index.” calculated that total
Black unemployment had
reached 2.9 million persons. It
said that this was a record.
The hidden index used by
the league includes workers
who have become discouraged
and are no longer actively
seeking employment, and
part-time workers who want
full-time employment.
Both types of workers are
excluded in the Labor
Department unemployment
figures, but the agency’s
researchers said that even the
government’s listing of 1.5
million Black jobless in the
first quarter had also been a
record.
Blacks Lead Jobless Rise
Especially hard hit by
unemployment in the Black
community, the Urban League
study indicated, were the poor,
the young and all males,
including young Vietnam
veterans.
And the report added’
“Blacks accounted for almost
all of the increase in
unemployment in the nation
during the latter half of the
first quarter of 1975. Os the
49,999 new officially
unemployed workers between
February and March, 47,000
were Black.”

She said she had just bought
tickets for friends to see the
musical “The Wiz,” because it
was one of the few plays which
doesn’t use vulgarity.
“People were such ladies and
gentlemen,” she said of the
time when “Gone With The
Wind” was a hit in 1940. “You
didn’t hear such vulgarity and
obscenity as you do now.
People use vulgar words and
think they’re advanced but the
words are really old-fashioned
Chaucerian words.”
