Shoppers First
Read Newspaper
Three out of four retail
customers today scanned a
newspaper before they
shopped.
That's a main finding of the
research study, “Shoppers on
the Move,” funded by the
Newsprint Information
Committee and conducted by
Response Analysis, Inc. Other
findings: People love to shop
and will travel far to do it;
some of a store’s best
customers are those who come
from a distance; decisions to
shop are not made far in
advance.

Local
Students
Ten oirtstandin high school
students who look forward to
careers in science or
engineering spent time last
week at a special program at
Clemson University on the
“Science of Materials”.
The rising juniors and
seniors were sponsored by
Babcock and Wilcox after
nomination by their counselors
and teachers.
It was a new learning
experience for them because
the intensive three day
program was spent
experiencing and working with
scientific and production
equipment, instead of listening
to lectures.
They were given the
opportunity to use such
equipment as x-ray diffraction
units, electron, as well as
optical, microscopes and
spectroscopes. In working
sessions they learned to apply
printed circuits to glass,
conduct experiments in
shaping ceramic parts , such as
bones, and to evaluate the
strength of materials-
The students were Jacque
Pye and Richard Lewis,
Richmond Academy; James H.
TusseyJl, Butler; Albert
Shelhorse, Glenn Hills; Mark
Manning, Hephzibah; Joel
Taylor and Hugh Youmans,
North Augusta; Jeffrey
Williams, Lucy Laney; Edward
Buerner and Margaret Welch,
Aquinas.

WISE ENERGY USE
MAKES SENSE
FOR EVERYBODY.
Straight Talk by
Bob Scherer
President,
Georgia Power Company
In a previous message, I reported to you
about our “summerize” campaign
helping residential customers use elec
tricity more efficiently. Many of our people
also are actively working with commercial
and industrial customers for the same
purpose.
These customers use large amounts of
electricity in the various ways they serve
you; they are your schools, hospitals,
restaurants, food processors, manufac
turers, shopping centers. If they can hold
down operating costs, that helps hold
down the price of goods and services
they provide for you.
Georgia Power engineers offer these
customers energy management surveys
(the same kind of assistance we offered
residential customers in our summerize
program). We can also help with analyses
of energy-use systems, studies of power
demand patterns and suggestions for
shifting demand to off-peak times.
Here again we’re attempting to help
customers watch electric costs, and
also to shave the peak demand respon
sible for much of our costly plant con
struction. This summer peak is created
largely by heavy air conditioning demand
on a very few hot days. If customers can
shift their use of electricity away from
peak hours, some of the need for con
struction will be reduced. This in turn will
help stabilize electric prices for everybody
ana help keep Georgia’s economy strong.
If you want information on using
energy more efficiently, contact any com
pany office. And if you have suggestions
on how we can better provide for your
electrical needs, I would appreciate
hearing from you.
