New Era Missionary Baptist Convention At Tabernacle

The convention which is
responsible to the National
Progressive Convention was
founded in December of 1961.
Its membership is made up of
over 100 churches in the state
of Georgia.
The convention is the result
of a split with the National
Baptist Inc. over the issue of
presidential tenure. In Augusta,
Tabernacle and Thankful
Baptist churches are the two
churches officially registered
with the National Progressive
Convention.
The convention has been
responsible for a SIO,OOO
donation to the Morehouse
College School of Religion
housed at the Intedenomi
national Theological Seminary
in the Atlanta University
Center. It is currently in the
process of buying the $45,000
Odd Fellows building as a
headquarters. The historic
building was one of the first to
be built by Blacks on Auburn
Ave. in Atlanta and is being
considered as a Bicentennial
site.
Past presidents of the
convention have been the Rev.
Dr. O.S. Stinson, Griffin, Ga.;
the Rev. J.A. Wilborn, Atlanta;
the Rev. Dr. C.S. Hamilton,
Augusta, and the Rev. R.H.
Milner, deceased. The current
president is the Rev. L.S. Stell

Hamilton is pastor, at 11 a.m.
The sermon will be delivered
on the 25th by the Rev.
Charlie Moore Jr. of Crawford
Baptist Church.

To Observe Women’s Day
The Women of Christ United
Presbyterian church, 1316

annual Women’s Day
observance, Sunday, Nov. 23,
at 11 a.m.
Mrs. W.L. Jagnandan, wife
of the pastor of Christ United
Presbyterian church will be the
guest speaker.
Mrs. Jagnandan is a native of
Guyana in South America. She
graduated from the Teacher’s
Training Class. She has studied
at Bethel College in Toronto
and Texas Christian College,
and is a specialist in training in
kindergarten and Headstart
programs.
She has served as president
of the Women’s Missionary

Apostlic Faith recently
returned from his annual
Apostlic trip which took him
to the Kingdom of Lesotho.
Bishop McDowell is also the
Honorary Consul for the state
of Pennsylvania to the
Kingdom of Lesotho.
According to Arthur Franklin
Shelton, public relations
director for the church, the
appointment is an
achknowledgement of Bishop
McDowell’s work for the whole
population.
During his stay in the
Kingdom of Lesotho, he was
received by the king and
queen, the prime minister and
David B. Bolen, U.S.
ambassador in Maseru, capital
city of Lesotho.
Bishop Shelton’s visit
coincided with the celebration
of the ninth anniversary of
Lesotho’s independence.
Lesotho which was formerly
Basutoland, is surrounded by
South Africa and is a
constitutional monarchy in the
British Commonwealth.
While in Maseru, Bishop
Shelton delivered teachings of
the Apostolic church through
the Whole Truth Programs. The
Whole Truth Programs are
broadcast on three transmitters
of the Lesotho National
Broadcasting Service and are
heard in Lesotho as well as the
Republic of South Africa.
He was greeted in Athens,
Greece by Monsignor
Seraphim, Archbishop of
Greece. In Athens, Bishop
Shelton went to Mars Hill
where the Apostle Paul spoke
The Augusta News-Review, November 20, 1975-
to the Greek populations about
19 centuries ago. On Mars Hill
Bishop Shelton recorded a new
sermon.
From Greece, Bishop
Shelton flew to the Balearic
Islands. In Palma de Mallorca,
he met Mr. Carlos de Meer de
Ribera, Civil Governor of the
Balearic Islands. He delivered a
document to the governor
concerning the Church of the
Lord Jesus Christ of the
Apostolic Faith.

London, England where Bishop
Shelton held service for
English-speaking peoples. His
service was broadcast via
satellite over the Atlantic
Ocean and relayed in the
United States.
On his return, the Bishop
was received at the
Philadelphia airport by
hundreds of members of the
Apostolic Church.
