music teacher and coacn, as weu as Dean Lawrence “Cap”
Harper, Prof. James Gabriel and the hard-hitting J.W. Brown.
(And may I add a personal note that Ike Washington starting
1938 coached at Paine for five years on a volunteer basis).
COACH JOHN TUTT A LIVING LEGEND
Dr. John Tutt, a graduate of Haines and Lincoln University
(Pa.) and who was strongly influenced by Miss Lucy Craft Laney,
stands in a high place by himself as one of America’s greatest
coaches and moulders of men. His winning championship teams
over a 50 year period stand unequaled. As one example - his 1929
Haines Eleven defeated the great Tuskegee team. One of hr. many
proteges is Coach David Dupree at Lucy C. Laney, who carries on
in the great Tutt tradition. The John Tutt Quarterback Club is
another living memorial
ROSTER OF ATHLETIC GREATS
While this roster could include many other good men, Td like
to start with these persons. In football: naturally, Emerson
Boozer would lead the list. We’d start with Julian Powell at
center; the yeat J.C. McNatt and “Barna” Cunningham in
backfield; solid linesmen were: “T” Shannon, Alex Reid,
Coleman Hillary, and Ernest “College Bear” Shanks. Two
excellent ends were Nate Cunningham and “Ox” Brown. Coach
Tutt always referred to LaVozier “Eddie Polo” LaMar as one of
his smartest quarterbacks. Others on this team would be: Charles
Boswell, Sylvester Boler, A.W. Wilson, Alfred Well and Horatio
“Galloping Ghost” LaMar. “Ike” Washington was another speedy
player.
In track: Herman Bowman was a great all around athlete on
the track field while Johnnie Wright, Sylvester Boler, G. Cook
and H. V. LaMar won numerous honors.
In basketball: There was John Booker, William Harley, Harry
Lee Posley, G. Bailey, “Bubba” Gardner, “Bingo” Johnson,
Rosco Thompson, James Rountree and Roscoe Williams.
On the baseball field: There’s been some great pitchers such as
Phil Cockrell, “Rip” Tolbert, Frank Evans, Nate Cunningham and
“Gus” Bailey; Catchers - The great J.C. McNatt, Eddie Lee,
Clarence Smith and LaVozier LaMar. Infielders to be featured:
Ed Miller, “Little Buddy” Mason, “Buddy” Abrams and Horatio
LaMar. We pick for outfield posts Herman Bowman, “Ike”
Washington and Dave King.
Female Athletes - Again very little has been written or
recorded but I do know that years ago Paine College fielded
several excellent girl’s basketball teams. One, which was headed
by Georgine Williams (daughter of local CME Bishop Williams)
moved on to win a Southeastern regional championship. And
back in the 1930’s at Haines under Coach John Tutt and H.V.
LaMar its girl’s basketball team won a Georgia state
championship. If any readers have additional information, please
share same with me. Thanks.

Sermon

COMMANDMENTS OF GOD
OR TRADITIONS OF MEN
Acts 4:18-19 “And they
called them, and commanded
them not to speak at all, nor
teach in the the name of Jesus.
But Peter and John answered
and said unto them, wether it
be right in the sight of God to
hearken unto more than unto
God, judge ye.”
Praise the Lord! Please
notice that the judges in court
room wanted to stamp out the
name of Jesus. Somebody
might have said in those days
that they would obey the court
and just in the name of the
Lord, or in the name of God -
but Peter and John, would not
and neither would a Holy
Ghost filled believer of today.
The word of God in St. Matt.
1:21 says “And thou shalt call
his name Jesus for he shall save
his people from their sins.” So
this is the reason Peter and
John made such a bold stand:
they chose to obey the will of
God rather than men.
With all our hearts, friends,
we should do what the holy
commandments in the Bible
tell us. Some people wonder
why we continue to give
thanks to the name Jesus. The
reason is because the word of
God says so. Men say it is not
good sense to repeatedly say
thank you Jesus, but please
notice this scripture. Hebrews
13:15 “By him therefore let us
offer the sacrifice of praise to
God continually that is, the
fruit of our lips, giving thanks
to his name.

before the Lord Jesus saved
me. And she would walk
through the home saying,
“Thank you Jesus, Thank you
Jesus, thank you Jesus.” This
made me very angry. It lid not
make sense to me why she had
to do all this. But praise the
Lord a year later, after I had
been preaching 8 years, the
Lord saved me. Then both of
us would walk through our
home saying "Thank you
Jesus”. The very name that
those judges in the fourth
chapter of Acts tried to stop
Peter and John from using, the
same name I hated to hear my
wife using, is the name, I now
love so much. Everywhere I go
I say Jesus. Do you ever just
lift up your hands and say
“Jesus I love you.” Oh, with
tears this morning, as the Holy
Spirit gave me utterance,
causing me to speak in an
unknown tongue, I praise the
name Jesus.
I beg you, obey the world of
God. Forget what men say,
concerning your soul, if he
does not say it from the Word
