The George P. Butler High
School Chorus under the
direction of Mrs. Millicent
Hannan, will present a
Christmas Cantata entitled A
Father Os
Black
History
Honored
Washington, D.C. -- The
Association for the study of
Afro-American Life and
History (ASALH) and the
Amoco Foundation of Chicago
placed a bronze marker at
the birthplace of Dr. Carter G.
Woodson, the “Father of Black
History,” Dec. 19, in New
Canton, Buckingham County,
Virginia.
Dr. Woodson was bom on
that date in 1875. This year
will mark the 100th
anniversary of his birth.
This initial step is part of a
joint bicentennial project
where ASALH and the Amoco
Foundation, Inc. will erect at
least 100 markers at places of
major Black achievement
throughout the nation.
Local ASALH branches and
other Black organizations will
be invited to nominate sites
from which a final selection
will be made by a committee
of scholars appointed by the
Association’s Board of
Directors.
The ASALH National Site
Selection Committee is
composed of President Edgar
Allan Toppin, chairman; Dr.
Charles Walker Thomas, dean
emeritus, District of Columbia
Teacher’s COLLEGE: and Dr.
Helen G. Edmonds, professor
of history, North Carolina
Central University. The
committee will be augmented
by college professors of history
and ASALH branch officers in
the cities where sites for
markers have been
recommended and are under
consideration.

Presented
To National
Council
Os Negro
Women
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -
The National Council of Negro
Women was presented with an
Eastman Kodak Company
exhibit honoring Mary McLeod
Bethune, the renowned
educator and founder of the
NCWC. The presentation took
place at the organization’s
annual convention in
Washington, D.C’
Entided “A Great Lady’s
Legacy,” the attractive photo
display was featured at
Kodak’s exhibits at the 1975
conventions of the NAACP and
the National Urban League.
The tribute, in honor of the
one-hundredth anniversary of
Mrs. Bethune’s birth, consists
of a central panel featuring a
arge portrait of Mrs. Bethune
along with her timeless
“Legacy.” The main panel is
complemented with a large
color photograph of the Mary
McLeod Bethune Memorial
located in Lincoln Park in
Washington, D.C.
Flanking the central panel
are six enlargement*
highlighting the dedication of
the Bethune Memorial in
Washington, D.C., July 10-12,
1974. These photos capturing
the excitement of the
three-day event were taken by
Kodak staff photographer Jim
Dennis.
Current plans are for the
exhibit to remain at the
NCWC’s headquarters in
Washington, D.C.

concert will be held in the

Bond. Proceeds from the raffle
was used to sponsor a banquet
for Vietnamese people now
living in Augusta.
The group will present a
program on the Nativity, Dec.
21st at 5 pan. at Holy Trinity
Catholic Church, Telfair Street.
