David Owens lays in two-points for Josey
Eagles Drop Spartans
By Peter Williams
The Josey Eagles pressed
their way to a 63-58
home-court victory over Glenn
Hills Monday night,
overcoming an early Spartan
lead.
Glenn Hills ran off to a
19-14 first quarter lead with
their fast offensive attack being
paced by Rostrellis Leach, who
had 10 points in the opening
period.
During the second quarter,
the Spartans pushed their lead

to as many as 17 points. But,
after calling a timeout, the
Eagles came out pressing. They
aggressively harassed the
Spartans dribblers and caused
them to make turnovers. Josey
added six points to their total
before halftime to trim the
Spartan lead to nine, 35-26.
The Eagles kept their
full-court press on in the 3rd
quarter. With their momentum
diminishing, Glenn Hills could
make only two baskets in the
period as Josey outscored them
Aquinas Downs Bulldogs
By Charles Vaughn
The “Fighting Irish” of
Aquinas lived up to their name
as they played a strong
defensive game and beat
Harlem 64-55 Friday night at
the Dog’s gym.
Aquinas went to work with
a stingy 1-2-2 defense that
many times in the first half
didn’t even allow Harlem to get
off a shot. Aquinas took the
lead early in the game and
managed to keep the upper
hand in that half through the
efforts of David Conley and
Sheldon Cooper on some fine
outside shooting and the fast
break while Greg Vaughn and
Grady Leonard put it up in the
middle. Ronnie Tankersly,
Harlem’s main threat, was sent
to the bench with three fouls
early in the second quarter and
it seemed as though Harlem
could “do no right”. They
turned the ball over time after
16 points to 4 to take a 42-39
lead.
Glenn Hills mounted a
comeback in the fourth
quarter, but key baskets by
Reginald Johnson and Cedric
Jones held them off.
Rostrellis Leach finished
with 20 points for the
Spartans, while Stan Cothran
scored 13 and Bob Turman has
10. For the high-flying Eagles,
Cedric Jones took game honors
with 22 points, Johnson
bucketed, 18 and Jegory
Burton added 13.
In the girls’ game, the Lady
Spartans defeated the Lady
Eagles, 47-37, to up their
region record to 8-2. The
Glenn Hills girls outscored
Josey 19 points to 7 in the
final quarter to wrap up their
victory. Ann Henderson led
Glenn Hills with 21 points and
Sheila Hall added 10. Regina
Cook was the only Josey
player in double figures with
15 points.
time with the Irish capitalizing,
especially on the fast break
headed by Conley.
It looked like Aquinas
wou'd have an easy victory at
the start of the third quarter,
sitting on an 11 point lead and
with Harlem playing sloppily
but R. Tankersly had other
plans in mind. He hit three
straight goals and chopped
their deficit to five points and
gave his team mates that
long-needed spark. With that
revival, team mates Richard
Williams hit a basket from the

comer and Adam Samuels got
on underneath to cut the
margin to one point (35-34).
For the rest of the period the
teams traded baskets with
Tankersly putting on a one
man show marked by his 25
foot bombs and two or three
blocked shots. The quarter
ended with Aquinas ahead
43-38.
The last period was the
highest scoring of all (21-17)
with both teams finding the
range, making it a back and
forth affair, and the margin
remaining no more than 3
points in Aquinas favor. With
4:20 left in the contest Archie
Norris and David Conley got
three quick lead passes for
layups to give the Irish an 8
point lead but Harlem
responded to the call and made
the score 56-52. Aquinas went
into a stall with 1:20 on the
clock and put into play their
spread offense on which Norris
scored two layups for the final
tally.

in an exciting game where the

Laney
Wins 79-48
The Big Laney Machine
sputtered offensively for the
first half, Laney led North
Augusta 13-8 at the end of the
first quarter and 28-18 at the
half. During the half time
break Coaches Bonner and
Arnold talked to the troops
and when the tip off came for
the third quarter Chris Harris
came out firing and scored 15
of his twenty two points in
that period. For all practical
purposes the game was salted
away at the end of the third
period, Laney led 53-31.
Jerome Wells, chipped in for
21 points. Wells played his
usual smooth game. Gresham
played well coming off his
injury and Greg Jackson scored
11 points.
The Laney defense held
North Augusta in check until
the offense came alive. Bobby
