Why
Foreign
Mission
by Rev. C.S. Hamilton
Tabernacle Baptist Church
Just a few weeks ago one of the members of Tabernacle Baptist
Church asked me why we should give for foreign mission? I will
raise the same question with you, “Why Foreign Mission”. There
is a movement to drop the word foreign and just say mission or
world mission.
We live in a small world now, so we must think of the world as
home rathei than just the local community. We are unprepared to
live in the kind of world communi'y we find ourselves in today.
Because of transportation, television and other advanced
communication systems, we are blended into on? world. We are
one world in conflict - on? world in upheavel, and revolution.
For too many people, this is a mean, jealous, unfriendly and
inhumane world. Yet it is a world of contrast; rich - poverty
stricken; employed - overemp'oyed - underemployed, while
others go tnemployed. Ours is a world of violence, stupidity,
greed, isolation, ignorance, blindness and despair.
Having said this, I hasten to add that this is God’s world. God
created this world and sustains it. God is interested in this world
and loves it.
This is my father’s world
Oh let me ne’er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong
God is the ruler yet.
This is my Father’s world
The battle is not done
Jesus who died shall be satisfied
And heaven and earth be one.
In the book of Psalm there is a verse wh.ch tells of God’s
concer.i. “He is a God of mercy and does not desire any to
perish” Psalm 86:15. Jesus said “Go ye therefore and make
disciples of all nations” Matt. 28:19.
God has a concern for all people. What about us? First we must
consider the motives for missionary service. We must participate
in foreign mission because of the need of humanity. Going into
all the world making disciples begins here, and reaches to the far
comers of the world. So then, we begin to misister wherever we
are, and reach the foreign field of Africa or where eve. our help is
needed.
Just as the cry in Jonah’s time of the wickedness in Niveveh
had come before God, the wickedness and hunger of the world
has come before God. The city of Niveveh was ripe for
judgement, and had it repent, it would have been ripe for
salvation. Men must either suffer judgment or seek salvation.
We must participate in and support foreign mission for our
own well being. We cannot hoard what God has given us. Try
hoarding God's love and it will get away from us. It must be used.
Recall when God fed the children of Israel on their journey from
Egypt, he told them to gather enough food for the care of their
families each day. Some gathered more than enough, and the
food spoiled overnight
Or take the man in the parable who had a bumper crop. He
tore down his barn to build a larger barn so he could store up
food and tell his so ri to take it easy. That same night these words
were said to him, “Thy fool this night thay soul shall be required
of Thee, then whose shall these things be.” This man’s emphasis
was on hoarding not giving. “Be thou faithful unto death and 1
will give you a crown of life.’’ Our commitment is a life time
commitment.
Secondly, we must consider world mission because of the
nature of the Gospel we preach. We preach a gospel of love, a
gospel of concern. Our gospel is a gospel of grace which says that
God lifts without me.it all repentant and believing sinners.
Some years ago I had the opportunity to visit Nigeria and
Haiti. I have seen the need and no one has to beg me to support
mission. One deacon stated when asked io give, “I had rather be
on the giving end than on the receiving end.”
Finally let us think about how God has planned for the mission

Musical America
The Augusta Symphony will
present a light-hearted tribute
to America’s musical heritage
in a special concert Sunday,
Jan. 18, at Augusta College
Performing Arts Theatre at 3

Beginning with the first
performance in America t of
THE BEGGARS OPERA in
1751, music in America has
developed a unique style in the
form of musical comedy and in
this lavishly costumed and
imaginatively staged
production by the ALLAN
LOKOS COMPANY, countless
favorites will be re-enacted.
From the old minstrels,
Stephen Foster’s songs, the
tunes of Romberg, Kem,
Rodgers, to mention only a
few, the panorama of our 200
year heritage will be unfolded
by this excitingly experienced
and talented group, promising
an afternoon of superb
entertianment.
Tickets will be available at

ensuing accident. Richard,
broken hearted, grieved himself
to death.
Strange that Bessie Smith
didn’t even have a headstone
until 1970. (She died Sept. 26,
1937) Janis Joplin, who
admired Bessie and Ms. Juanita
Green, a good friend got
together and her final resting
place was marked. Robert
Altshuler, Columbia Record
executive, was responsible for
the inscription which reads:
“The greatest Blues singer in
the world will never stop
singing... Bessie Smith...
1895-1937. There will always
be only one “Empress of the
Blues... Bessie Smith. ”

field to be reached. It has been stated that we need to support
foreign mission because of our need, anu for the nature of the
Gospel we preach. The way God has of reaching those who are in
need is through you and me. God must use us. God has no other
hands.
There is a role the church member, must play. God does not
evangelize without man’s help. We must realize the importance of
the human instrument in fulfilling God’s eternal purpose. We
must hear the voice of God and say as Isaiah said, Here am I,
send me.” God is depending on us to do the job, He has no other
hands but ours.
1 read a story which illustrates why we should participate in
foreign mission. It told of a man and his family who were share
croppers. Each year, when it was time to reckon with the owner
usua'ly they just brjke even or they were still in debt. One year
they had a good harvest and a little money was left over. They
had very few of the necessities and no luxuries. They did not have
enough money to buy for all members of the famLy, an' finally
decided to buy a mirror. A few days later a mirror came. They
tore the bo > open and each looked at himself. The youngest son
looked at the mirror an? when he saw himself he did not know
whether to frown or cry, for you see litth Willie had been kicked
in the face by a mule whin he was a small boy. His face had been
left scarred and twisted. It was a pretty ugly sight.
He turned to his mother and said, Mommy did you know I
looked like this all the time? She said yes 1 knew it. ANd you still
loved me, sai J Willie. Yes Willie 1 loved you because you’re mine.
With all the ugliness of the world, we ask, does God still love
us. Yes, God loves us because we are his.
