My friend Robert is a bill
collector. He bugs people who
won’t pay the doctor. He
repossesses carsand refrigerators.
He writes rough letters to
delinquent accounts
threatening to sue. The people
he deals with are poor managers
who are confused in their
buying habits. They get
themselves into a financial bind
and can’t get out.
Robert has been in this
business for about twenty
years. So, I asked him how
many families in financial arears
put God first with their
money. “How many tithes
have you dealt with?” I asked.
He grinned and said, “In my
entire experience as a bill
collector. I’ve never hounded a
home that tithed.” The reasons
are simple: tithing teachesself
discipline. Anyone with a

regular pattern of giving
develops inner control over
money. If we pay God on time,
it is easier to pay the rent on
time.
If God is first, first dollar,
first day of the week, first
minute of the morning, other
things fall into line.
Tithing changes values. In
Augusta, many people begin
each day by unrolling their
prayer carpet in the direction
of Georgia Railroad Bank.
Jesus said, “You cannot serve
God AND money.” (Mt. 6:24
NEB) Some of us are buying
things we don’t need, with
money we don’t have, to keep
up with people we don’t even
like.
When Christ is lord of the
family budget, money matters
fall into line. What a blessing
that is!

Love Is The Theme At
St. Albans Episcopal Church
By Mary Stewart
“They'll Know We Are
Christians By Our Love” may
well be the theme song of St.
Albans Episcopal church on
Lumpkin Road, a busy
thoroughfare. But there, beside
it, sits this small church where
Christian love is shown in
many ways.
Perhaps the first evidence of
this is a small sign on the front
stens that reads “THIS
CHURCH IS OPEN AT ALL
TIMES TO ALL
PEOPLE”...?md this sign means
just what it says.
“All people’’...St. Alban’s
has been spoken of as a “Little
United Nations” because it has
so many people from different
places - Maine, New Jersey,
North Carolina, Texas, New
Hampshire. Idaho, and even a
few from Georgia! Many of its
people come from other
countries, Germany, Austria,
Canada, England, Ghana, and
India to name just a few. And
“all times” includes that “most
segregated hour of the week”
10 o'clock Sunday morning.
How did all of this come
about? St. Alban’s has always
been a church where
servicemen from Fort Gordon
are welcomed so they brought
some of their diversity into the
parish. But the real opening up
to persons of all races came
about 12 years ago when its
rector Fr. Edward Waldron
(who is, I am sure familiar to
many in the Black
communities) called together
some of his members and told
them he wanted to plan a
vacation bible school that
would be open to all children
of any color or creed. A
publicity campaign was set up.
This included flyers handed
out door to door, and a ride
through the surrounding area
on a fire engine inviting all

The Augusta News-Review - February 26,1976 -
children to come and come
they did. Black and white,
Baptists, Presbyterian, Roman
Catholics, Moslems, Buddhists
and the parishes own Episcopal
children.
Since that time, the bible
school has grown and
developed, encouraged by and
under the direction of the
present rector, Fr. Harry W.
Shipps (who is equally well
known to the readers of this
paper). This has become an
annual affair famed throughout
the Episcopal Diocese of
Georgia.
For 10 days during each
summer, a staff of 25-30
devoted persons - Black/white,
male/female, teens and adults -
worked together to make the
school meaningful and fun for
about 100 children. Between
30-35 children come from
Hyde Park each year. Some of
the children have grown too
old to be students, but they
enjoy it so much they have
become helpers. For 10 days
each summer, there is a
wonderful time with a program
that includes a daily church
service, lessons, recreation,
refreshments, and crafts.
The highlight of the school
is the last night when the
“Graduation Mass” is held.
Parents and friends come to
service, where the children
receive awards, and then go to
the reception in the parish hall
afterwards to receive
refreshments and to see the
display of crafts.
Many things are taught in
this school, but the main
theme is LOVE.
If one wants to reach the
parents, start with the children
is a good axiom anytime and
this is the way it has worked at
St. Albans. The children came
and liked what they saw. They

came and liked what they saw
-- some of them stayed. Many
of the most devoted Black
parishioners have come
this way, but the chief one that
comes to mind is our beloved
friend and brother, Thomas J.
Edwards, whose death this past
summer was a great loss to us
all.
Mr. Edwards was prominent
in all areas of our church life.
He rose as high as a layman can
in the Episcopal church, having
become a chalice
administrator. The ad for our
church in this paper is a
memorial to him. Tom
Edwards showed forth in his
life this Christian love.
But besides the above, what
other evidences are there of
this love ? There are many
including our “Food for the
Hungry” program. Food (or
money to buy it) is offered
every Sunday at St. Alban's
altar. This food is given
directly to those who need it.
We take quite literally our
Lord Jesus’s command “If you
love me, feed my sheep”.
There is also clothing stock
available for anyone in need.
The buildings are used often
during the week for meetings
held by organizations where
both Black and white are
welcome. Among these are
integrated ballet classes for the
YWCA, School Safety Patrol
Meetings and a chapter of AA.
There are many other
examples of our attempts to
reach out to our brothers and
sisters for any color, but I
guess the best way to know is
to come and see for yourselves.
Fr. Shipps and his parishioners
extend a cordial invitation to
all of you to come any Sunday
morning at 10 o'clock and see
if “They’ll Know We Are
Christians By Our Love”.
