Forgiveness
through
love
By Rev. Dr. C.E. Wells, Sr.
As we enter into the Lenten
Season (March 3rd - April
18th) we would do well to try
to capture the deeper meaning
and greater significance of this
event in our lives. One popular
song writer has decreed that
“What The World Needs Now
Is Love,” and while I accept
this premise I hasten to
add...through forgiveness. For
with this understanding we
come to see the tremendous
impact of love on the cross
through forgiveness as Jesus
prayed “Father Forgive Them
For They Know Not What
They Do”.
History records that
Jesus spoke seven times from
the cross during his cruel and
inhumane execution, but of
these seven utterances none
demonstrates more his concern
and outward reach for sinful
hummanity. Here we see a man
suffering untold agony, his
body physically drained and
his spirit overwhelmingly
subdued. Yet, in the midst of
these negative circumstances it
was a positive expression of
prayer for the well being of his
persecutors that fell from his
lips.
In the Greek translation we
are told Jesus prayed this
prayer not once but many
times...for the soldiers, for the
crowd, when nailed to the
cross, when the soldiers
gambled for his garmet. He
kept on praying Father Forgive
them...
Looking at our lives today

we find that this is a prayer
that rarely escapes our lips. We
find it so difficult, so
inconvenient, if you please, to
forgive those who have injured
us. But what we fail to realize
is that until we can genuinely
forgive others our sins will not
be forgiven. “Forgive us of our
tresspasses as we forgive those
who tresspass against us”!
As we stand under the
shadow of the cross some 1976
years later, and visualize the
world in which we find
ourselves, with all of its
negatives; as we see the vast
chasms of indifference in our
homes, communities, churches,
nations and in the world and
discern so few expressions of
this most positive concept
being uttered; as we look at a
world worn rife with crimes in
high places and discover the
low value placed on human life
by our Black brothers and
sisters who kill each other daily
over trivia; as we look for the
church to lead us out of this
self-imposed delimma and the
church remains silent and at
best ineffective, we come to
recognize that what the world
needs now more than even
before is the tremendous spirit
of Jesus portraying forgiveness
through love as He uttered
these sin piercing words
“FATHER FORGIVE THEM
FOR THEY KNOW NOT
WHAT THEY DO.”
