Paine Officials Map Strategies
To Meet Challenge Grants
Representatives from Paine
College and two other
historically Black, private
colleges met in Atlanta
Thursday to discuss strategies
to successfully meet alumni
challenge grants being offered
them by die Bush Foundation
of St. Paul, Minn.
Dr. Julius S. Scott, president
of Paine College; Dr. Daniel A.
Collins, chairman of the Board
of Trustees; Robert K.
Kazanjian, director of
development; Mrs. Clara West,
president of the Paine Alumni
Association; and Mrs.
Daffemeeze Pitts, director of
Alumni Affairs convened with
fund raising leadership from
Tougaloo College, Tougaioo,
Miss., and Xavier uiversity,
New Orleans, Louis. They
consulted with Dr. Humphrey
Doermann, the executive
director of the Bush
Foundation, and Henry A.
Maly, vice-president for College
Relations of Saint Mary’s
College, Winona, Minn.

Although Food Is Rationed In Cuba,
Americans Were Served Good Meals

Editor's Note: This is the
7th of an 8-part series on
the recent visit to Cuba
by 18 leaders of the
Black Press and other
fields.
ATLANTA, Ga. - Cuba's
114,524 square kilometers -
four times the area of Haiti --
make it the largest island in the
West Indies.
And it is one of die most
fertile with much flat and
rolling land that is easy to
cultivate. And the country is
famous for its fish.
Some of the varities found
in abundance re: Tarpon,
barracuda, mehisa, sharks,
dolphins, kingfish and shellfish.
Our delegation had an
opportunity to try much of the
seafood.
Breakfast usually consisted
of fruits or juices, ham and
eggs, breads, case con leche
(hot milk with a very small
amount of very strong coffee).
Cigars or tobacco were always
served as part of the meal
The heaviest meal was served
at 22:30 p.m. consisting of an
appetizer, fruits or soup or
sometimes both, salad and a
main course with meats ranging
from filet minon to frog legs,
vegetables sufficient enough
even for the heartiest eaters.
A lighter meal was served in
the evenings between 7-8:30
p.m. Some members of our
group who were interested in
black beans soup were taken to
a famous restaurant where
P.O. Box 953
established alumni challenge
grants for several independent
colleges in Minnesota.
Exceptional results have been
achieved, in some instances
doubling alumni gifts and
participation after only two or
three years.
Increasingly, Paine College
has had graduates taking
responsible leadership positions
in business, industry,
government, education, and
the professions, with a
commensurate increase in their
giving ability. Paine has
recently began to step up its
alumni fund raising effort. For
the 1975-76 academic year,
alumni gifts totaled $15,500.
The challenge grant is expected
to substantially increase the
number of alumni making
annual, unrestricted gifts and
to increase the gift size. The
maximum award appropriated
to Paine fm the foundation for
1976-77 is $15,000.
Although the challenges to
Paine, Tougaloo, and Xavier
are all different in detail,

Although every meal served
us was abundant, it is a well
known fact that food,
especially meats, is rationed. In
some parts of the country the
local people get only a
half-pound of meat per person
per week, and in others, a
fourth-pound.
Cooking oil, rice, beans and
other items are rationed also

Josey To Have
Closed Circuit Cameras,
Butler Will Not
T.W. Josey High School will
have closed circuit television
cameras in its halls next year
but Butler High School will
not, the Richmond County
Board of Education decided
last Thursday.
According to William G.
Oellerich, superintendent of
schools, the principal at Butler
has some reservations to the
effectiveness of the cameras.
Last month the Board saw a
demonstration and heard from
the principal of Edward E.
Murphey Junior High School.
He said the cameras act as a
deterrent against trouble in the
hall.

of the schools, the general
thrust and goals are identical.
The actual amounts to be paid
will depend upon each school’s
achievement of predetermined
standards.
The Bush Foundation has
indicated that similar
challenges may be offered to
the three colleges in
subsequent years, predicated
upon substantial achievement
during the first year. Each of
the schools is a four-year,
accredited, co-educational
liberal arts college and a
member of the United Negro
College Fund. The foundation
directors have further indicated
that these grants may be the
beginning of a series of such
challenges to other private,
Black colleges.
Over the next several
months tire Paine College
delegation will spearhead the
organization and
implementation of enhanced
national alumni fund-raising
efforts to meet the June 30,
