MARY LOU WILLIAMS
Swinging Lady Os Jazz
I have spoken about quite a
few pianists in the last few
weeks and without doubt you
can see that each were
different. Some of those
pianists are quite famous but
some are relatively unknown to
many although they may be
well known in their own
circles.
Mary Lou Williams may be a
new name to some of you but
to others this warm, wonderful
lady is one of the finest jazz
pianists in the world.
Mary Lou was bom Mary
Elfrieda Winn in Pittsburgh,
May 8, 1910. She has been
musically inclined all her life
and by 1925 she was making
her professional debut while on
tour with Seymour and
Jeannette, a vaudeville act.
Her first band job was with a
group led by alto saxman, John
Williams, who later became her
first husband.
Mary Lou is best known for
her long association with The
Andy Kirk band which she
joined in 1929 as an arranger.
From 1931 through 1932 she
served as pianist for the band.
She and the band enjoyed
several successful years in
Kansas City before they came
east.

Arriving in the East her
talent at arranging was
discovered by Benny
Goodman. She arranged quite a
few tunes for Goodman
including “Camel Hop” and
“Roll ’Em”. Although these
tunes became quite popular,
her best known work was for
Andy Kirk. This includes
“Froggy Bottom”, “Walking
and Swinging” and “Little Joe
From Chicago”.
For a while Mary Lou had
her own band with Shorty
Baker (her second husband) on
trumpet. Later she worked
with small groups at Case
Society in New York City. She
wrote “Trumpets, No End”
(The title was later changed to
“Blue Skies”) for Duke
Ellington. She also completed
“Zodiac Suite” which she
introduced at a Town Hall
concert in 1945. It was played
by The New York
Philharmonic in 1946.
Mary Lou has always been
closely associated with
Thelonious Monk and Bud
Powell. This association led to
the gradual evolution of her
piano style which earlier
showed the unmistakable
influence of Earl Hines and the
Boogie Woogie fad.
Page 2
Mary Lou was a most sought
after pianist during the Be-Bop
days. During the 40s she had
many hits. These included “In
The Land Os 00-bla-Dee”
(which was a Bop Fairy tale)
and “Pretty Eyed Baby”. In
1952 she left for England and
spent a year there.
Upon her return to the U.S.
she devoted most of her life to
religious activities and was
completely out of music for
two or three years. She did
have a few occasional night
club engagments and concert
dates in 1958 but has been
inactive since then.
She was responsible for
launching a campaign to help
musicians who had deep
problems. This has been very
successful
Mary Lou Williams is not
only a fine pianist but a deeply
religious, Christian woman of
whom one can be justly proud.

■ For Bth through 14th 1 *
ARIES - MArch 21st to April 20th - The Full Moon on the Bth
might revive an old personal problems; this is only temporary, so
don’t fly off the handle! The Mars/Pluto conjunction on the 9th
favors financial deals, and the 10th might be when an important
new project you have been planning gets under way. The
Moon/Uranus opposition on the 12th may bring an unexpected
domestic expense, but the Moon/Jupiter conjunction on the 14th
works to your benefit financially, romantically and could also
produce a bit of news you’ve been eargerly awaiting.
TAURUS - April 21st to May 20th - The Full Moon on the Bth
relates to your love relationship, or a social plan, or maybe both.
Be flexible if things do not work out as expected on that day.
The Mars/Pluto conjunction on the 9th is dynamic for your love
life, while the big assortment of conflicting aspects on the 10th
makes this a day to push ahead toward important goals - but
gently. Do not stir up friction in a close relationship on the 12th;
the Moon/Uranus opposition spells trouble if you’re too
aggressive. The Moon/Jupiter conjunction means money!
GEMINI - May 21st to June 20th - The Full Moon on the Bth
may bring some stress into your career or home environment, or
perhaps both; not a day to upset any applecarts. The 9th is highly
creative for you, while the many aspects prevailing on the 10th
very much favor your promoting yourself and your skills to the
right people. The Moon/Uranus opposition on the 12th may bring
a sudden call on your sympathies; be a helpful humanitarian! That
14th is a super day for you, with the Moon/Jupiter conjunction "J
big boost to your love life and finances.
CANCER - June 21st to July 22nd - The Full Moon on the Bth
could relate to in-law problems, or a contract or agreement that’s
a bit dubious. When Mars conjoins Pluto on the 9th, you’re extra
creative, so present innovative ideas where they will be well
received. Mixed aspects on the 10th can result in constructive
progress if you remain cool-headed. The Moon/Uranus opposition
on the 12th may face you with a decision involving love versus
friendship, while the Moon/Satum square on the 13th might see a
mild dispute with your love-partner.
LEO - July 23rd to August 22nd -The Full Moon on the Bth
also focuses on money; your own earnings and/or shared income
and expenses. Don’t get into any financial arguments on this day.
Travel may be in the picture on the 9th, as Mars conjoins Pluto,
while the widely assorted aspects of the 10 th can propel you into
the spotlight on the iob or in the community. Try not to
challenge authority on the 12th when the Moon/Uranus opposition
works against you. A domestic problem that arises with the
Moon/Satum square of the 13th can just melt away.
VIRGO - August 23rd to September 22nd - The Full Moon on
the Bth is a turnabout from yesterday’s harmony; overemotional
reactions by you and/or your love-partner can exaggerate the
importance of an incident. Better news is that the 10th should
settle any or all relationship problems; varied aspects on that day
also favor travel or academic plans. On the 12th, the
Moon/Uranus opposition suggests caution in legal matters or
signing documents. The 14th, though, is a great day for your
job/career progress, as the Moon conjoins Jupiter.
LIBRA - September 23rd to October 22nd - The Full Moon on
the Bth need not affect you, provided you keep out of other
people’s personality problems. The 10th looks very fortunate for
finances; Venus conjoins Pluto and cash could flow in your
direction. Follow your natural instinct to weigh decisions on the
12th, though, as the Moon/Uranus opposition does not favor snap
judgments. Postponement of social plans for the 13th may stem
from the Moon/Satum square, but the 14th brings a green light
for most important goals, as the Moon conjoins Jupiter.
SCORPIO - October 23rd to November 22nd - The Bth brings a
Full Moon which is apt to reflect in your social life; some minor
upset, perhaps. The Mars/Pluto conjunction on the 9th means
you can control your environment and those in it, while the
Venus conjunction to both Mars and Pluto on the 10th is a big
stimulus in your love life. Strive to be cool-headed and
self-disciplined on the 12th, when the Moon/Uranus opposition
generates tension with others. The 14th is a fine money-making
day, as the Moon/Jupiter blend denotes profitable transactions.
SAGITTARIUS- November 23rd to December 21st - The Full
Moon on the Bth invokes your home base or your career
environment (or both) in a stressful manner, don’t force issues.
The 10th appears to be ultra-social, in terms of invitations, plans,
new contacts. The Moon/Satum square on the 13 th does not
favor litigation, or speculation, but on the 14 the Moon/Jupiter
conjunction in your Seventh House very much favors your
entering a partnership arrangement. This is a highlighted area for
you these days anyway, and can pertain to a personal or business
relationship.
CAPRICORN - December 22nd - January 19th - The Full
Moon on the Bth cautions against legal involvement and/or in-law
friction. The 10th is a fortunate day, can produce material
opportunity and emotional rapport with your love partner. When
the Moon opposes Uranus on the 12th, don’t become part of a
feud between two friends as you could wind up in the middle!
The Moon/Satum square on the 13th may see you and a close
associate at loggerheads over a financial question; however, the
Sun/Moon trine on the same date shows that compromise is
possible.
AQUARIUS - January 20th to February 18th - The Full Moot!
on the Bth has financial overtones for you; not the day to make
or break agreements involving money. When Mars conjoins Pluto
on the 9th, travel or an educational program may be in the works
The 10th is uitrabusy - socially, domestically. Th? Moon/Uranus
opposition on the 12th may prompt you to make impulsive
changes in your life; think about this first. On the 13th, the
Moon/Satum square may remind you of certain obligations, while
the Moon/Jupiter blend on the 14th favors both love and job
advancement.
PISCES - February 19th to March 20th - More emphasis on a
close relationship, which may be under stress with the Full Moon
of the Bth; don’t be too demanding. The Mars/Pluto blend on the
9th favors money-making action while the Moon/Neptune trine
on the 10th could bring you a bit of luck in speculation. Guard
against impetuous speech on the 12th, when the Moon opposes
Uranus, and if you are planning to launch a new job or career
venture, time it for the 14th for best results, when the Moon
conjoins Jupiter.
