The Augusta News-Review - September 9, 1976 Wildcat Defense Shines Against Southwest By John E. Hardy 111 The Lucy Laney Wildcats, a team known in the past for their offensive ability, had to rely mainly on its defense Saturday night to defeat Southwest Macon 9-7. After a scoreless opening period, the Wildcats drew first blood after the Sophomore end Michael Grady rushed through the Southwest offensive line to block a punt to give Laney a first down inside the Southwest 20 yard line. On third down, quarterback James Wilson hit James Howard coming out of the backfield for a 13 yard sideline completion. On die next play, halfback Darryl Cogle scored from six yards out to give Laney a 7-0 lead. On Laney’s ensueing kick-off, Southwest mishandled the ball and recovered it on their own 1 yard line. On the next play, the Wildcat defense tackled running back Gary Brooks before he got out of the backfield for a safety to give Laney a 7-0 lead. On a fourth and one situation, with Laney’s defense tight trying to prevent a first down, Brooks took a pitch-out around his left end and scampered 30 yards to the end zone barely touched. Coach David Dupree said that his quarterback situation is his main conem at this point He has three inexperienced men handling that important position. As of yet, keeping in mind that this was only the first game, neither have been able to move the team consistantly. Defensively, it’s a different story. With seven starters returning from last year’s team, the defense seems to be very much situated. The victory over Southwest is only the first game of three that Laney will be representing the C.S.R.A. against Macon, Ga. This weekend, the Wildcats will travel to Macon to play defending state champion Macon Central, and next week, Northeast will come to Augusta to tackle the Wildcats. But a Black intellectual cannot be defined simply by an occupational role or by formal education.. Black intellectuals who will make meaningful contributions to the fight against imperialism are people who hare developed adequate theoretical skill grounded in a critical social analysis of the oppression of Black people and of I .X imperialism: are able to sum up the concrete conditions of a problem bv discovering the logical pattern and main aspects of the problem: integrate this summation with established revolutionary theoretical principles, and creative! y apply the lessons learned to contribute to solving the problems that Black people face and which exist for the entire society. Examples of this commitment include W.E.B. Dußois, Langston Hughes, Paul Robeson, Malcom X, and Oliver Cox. Moreover, our theory must not only be rooted in a scientific approach to understanding the complex nature of U.S. society, and the historical development of U.S. imperialism, but also in a commitment to use stich theory as a weapon in the struggle against imperialism. This includes refuting the theories of racial inferiority being put forward by professors in major U.S. universities, the intellectual justifications for anti-people programs constituting “benign neglect”, and the educations programs that slow down the intellectual advancement of the masses of people. There f ore, we Black intellectuals must organize ourselves and forge unity around the historical condition of the people, and around the intellectual, moral, and political imperatives for our work: WE DECLARE that a primary task of Black intellectuals today is to study the character and historical development of U.S. imperialism, especially its impact on Black people, and to promote this study throughout schools, publications, conferences, and organizations, WE DECLARE that the main objective of our study must be to expose the essence of imperialism and provide the intellectual tools necessary for combating every imperialist assault on the people; WE DECLARE that our immediate goal is to establish a new unity between Black intellectuals and the Black liberation movement in which intellectuals function to serve the interests of the 1 people with humility based on compassion, strength, based on science, and a revolutionary optimism that the people will triumph over all enemies and prosper. Westside Proves To Tough For Eagles By John E. Hardy HI The Westside Patriots proved Friday night that an A football squad could not compete with a AAA squad as they stunned Josey’s Eagles 28-0. The Eagles stayed within striking distance throughout the first half as the score at half-time was 7-0 Westside. The Pats scored in the first quarter on what seemed to be a busted play. Quarterback Mike Kelly fumbled the ball as he was attempting to roll out to throw a pass. The ball bounced right back into his hands and he cut through the Eagle defense and raced 32 yards to pay-dirt With the score 7-0 the Eagles put together their only sustained drive of the night as quarterback Calvin Johnson completed three consecutive passes to put the ball inside Westside’s 20 yard line. But the Patriots defense stood up to the occasion as Josey ran 14 plays starting from the 18 yard line. On forth and goal from the 3, Johnson tried a quarterback sneak that was stopped 1 yard short of the end-zone. After a fumble recovery by the Eagle defense in its own territory, halfback Ricky Lee attempted an option pass that Other Scores Around The CSRA By John Hardy The North Augusta Yellow Jackets put their gigantic defense to work as they outmaned Butler Bulldogs 26-7.
