President Jimmy Carter
By AL IRBY
President Carter has raised a
profound concept of “HUMAN
RIGHTS”. This is a facet of
the philosophy that the Greek
learned-men made famous, and
Christianity embodied. Western
men have talked about it, some
have tried to apply it as away
of life. President Carter has yet
to evolve a balanced policy on
this delicate issue. He is trying
to be selective rather than

New Security Same As The 01d... With One
Small Difference
The two latest additions to
the University Hospital’s
Security Department are
women.
In spite of the fact that
Betty Green and Gretchen
Pelham are the first two
women to join this department
they hardly consider
themselves “pioneers” in this
area. They share some of the
same feelings about the job
they are doing for the hospital.
Foremost on the minds of both
is the desire to be accepted by
other hospital employees and
to be called upon by
employees when the need for a
security guard arises.
Gretchen, a four and
one-half year veteran of the
Augusta Police Department,
freely admits that she is not a
“Women’s Libber”. She says
she hardly feels the need to be.
A petite blond, Gretchen is a
very feminine woman who
enjoys working with and
helping others. She feels that
she can best accomplish her
goal in this type of position.
“Police type work can get into
your blood quickly,” she said
laughing. “My only worry at all
is that the other security
guards may not realize that in a
crisis situation I can take care
of myself!”
Betty Green, a tall
woman with a friendly quiet
manner was the first of the two
women to begin work. She
admits that at first she felt a
bit uneasy, but as she got to
know the men the feeling
gradually vanished. Betty '
believes that the key to being *

calling for an all-out
application. But the President
is falling into the same moral
pit that the fathers of this
country did; that is, “Black
Humanity” doesn’t count. Mr.
Carter began his “Puritan
Campaign” with the Russians,
which is all and well, but what
about South Africa and
Rhodesia?
Each day the United States
of America continues to
support the racist minority
government of South Africa.
We are personally and
collectively responsible for the
brutality and genocide which is
occuring in both South Africa
and Rhodesia in a smaller scale.
United States investments in
South Africa alone prolong the
brutal repression of eighteen
million Blacks. Over a
thousand B 1 acks have been
killed, and unknown thousands
have been wounded, and
thousands of others have been
thrown in dirty jails. The many
graves of Black children who
have been shot down should
to provide University with a
high quality security force.
“I accepted this position
because of the challenge it
offered,” Betty stated. “1 felt 1
could meet the challenge. I
only hope that the University
employees will feel free to call
on me if they need assistance.”
Captain John Haywood,
head of University’s Security
department, is very pleased
with the job the women have
done so far. “They fit in well,”
he said. “One of my first
qualifications for this job is an
ability to work well with other
people. Public relations is
important in this kind of work.
You can be a good policeman

well with others in an agreeable

The President has strongly
stressed his intention to speak
out forthrightly and
unequivocally against
repression, especially of
Russian intellectuals. Maybe
the United States should not
hesitate to make its position
known when it deems that it is
appropriate. But it has failed to
do so all too often, when they
are men of color, therefore
leaving an unfortunate
impression of American
indifference to dark-skin civil
liberties. So, here in lies the
dilemma of the “double
standards” in life. When the
American goyemment begins

Eastern Europe with increased
frequency, does this in fact
