Young, as the U.S. Ambassador
to the U.N., the U.C.C., CRJ
called upon Ambassabor
Young to proclaim
immediately his commitment
to African self-determination;
to support a policy which does
not interfere with the rights of
the people to decide for
themselves their system of
self-government, the most
unalienable of all rights.
Furthermore, the
Commission called upon the
U.C.C. General Synod (meeting
in D.C. in June and July) to
declare its distress and to
protest the wanton killing of
thousands and constant
oppression of millions in
Southern Africa and to
condemn rigidly the role being
played by the U.S., and foreign
corporations in this most
atrocious and barbaric war
against humanity .
The announced plan calls for
all Americans to join in
support for
(a) condemnation of
apartheid in South Africa and
demand the release of all
political prisoners and the
establishment of majority rule;
(b) immediate restoration of
the Transkei as a part of the
Republic of South Africa and
of its residents to full
economic and political
participation of the Republic
of South Africa;
(c) a demand for the U.S. to
provide special political refugee
status to Africans forced to
flee repression in the contested
zones;
(d) opposition to U.S.
support of any settlements that
will subsequently compromise
the freedom of Blacks in
Southern Africa;
(e) a mandatory arms
embargo against South Africa

W. McKinney, Executive
Director of Augusta
Opportunities Industrialization
Center, Inc. was elected
Secretary/Treasurer Convenor
for the second time for Region
IV. This region is comprised of
North Carolina, South
Carolina, Florida, Alabama,
Mississippi, Tennessee,
Kentucky, and Georgia. Other
officers elected were Mr. Mel
Davis, Convenor, Atlanta OIC;
and Ms. Priscilla
Vice-Convenor, Columbia, SC

African Liberation Movements,
to direct the African Project.
The first phase of the
project calls for a national
conference and strategy session
March 18-20 in Washington,
D.C., designed to develop a
unified national thrust
providing specific human,
financial and other forms of
support to the liberation
movements. In addition, the
conference will explain the
root causes of the struggle in
Southern Africa.

Dr. J. Rupert I’icott, Executive Director, Association for the Study of
Afro-American Life and History, congratulates Raymond Jacobson, Executive
Director, U.S. Civil Service Commission, on the Commission s exhibit, “Black
Achievers From the Pages of American History,” which commemorates National
Afro-American History Month, February 1- 28. The display located in CSC’s
Central Office in Washington, D.C., features illustrations of 16 prominent Black
Americans, past and present, whose achievementsand attainments are symbolic and
illustrative of many others throughout the pages of American history .

The 1 977 Masters
Tournament will be held April
7,8, 9, and 10 at the Augusta
National Golf Club. The

thousand entries when first
announced in the fall of 1975.
The Story Hour, a Kraft
sponsored sixty minute show
was conceived in 1974 as a
“total cultural experience
encompassing Black poetry,
folklore, music, history and
contemporary dialogue,”
according to Network
spokesperson Joan Henry. In
its three year tenure, more
than one hundred entertainers,
celebrities, and Black leaders
have joined the highly repected
Dee/Davis couple. Stephanie
Mills, Dick Gregory, Melba
Moore, Geoffrey Holder and
Clevon Little among them.
The write-on contest
provides categories for
expression in poetry, short
stories or essays of 500 words
or less. A major attraction for
entrants is the opportunity to

The Augusta Black Festival
Will Cost 6,000
As the Augusta Black
Festival enters into its second
year, it is the aim of the board
of directors to make the
Festival bigger and better than
ever. After receiving estimates
from most of the
organization’s chairpersons, we
project that the Festival for
April will cost approximately
S6OOO. Last year’s Festival
attracted some 38,000 people
name will indicate the basis of
qualification. American Player
invitations for 1977 are strictly
limited to the following
reouirements:

The Festival’s primary goal
is two-fold: 1) To develop
among Blacks an increased
proclivity toward and
appreciation for activities
which convey their cultural
heritage in the arts, crafts,
drama, dance, muse, sports,
and history. 2) To share these
contains 72 invitees of which
64 are professionals and 8 are
amateurs. This compares with
59 professionals and 9
amateurs invited last year.
Seven more P.G.A.
tournaments remain to be
played before the Masters
which could result in
additional invitations.

activities with all people in the
CSRA, regardless of race.
It is also the aim of the
Festival to bring in a variety of
productions that will be Black
orientated, and some that will
be otherwise. In addition to
the three weeks Festival, the
board of directors is
committed to providing a
variety of activities and
programs throughput the year.
The Festival has always had
integrated participation, and
many of these activities should
prove attractive to broad
segments of our area. It is the
goal of the Festival to bring
about a better understanding
between the races, and thus a
better relationship.
We are still in need of
volunteers to work with
various Festival committees.
