Tuskegee,” George Washington
Carver.
“Carver set out to nnd a
cure for cotton’s excesses. He
found that cotton used huge
amounts of nitrogen in
growing, and added little to the
soil.
“The peanut was the little
crop grown for generations by
poor farmers. Carver found
that it adds nitrogen and other
nutrients to the soil, and
thrives in the hot southern
sun.”
Carver then went to work to
create a market for southern
peanuts, the article stated.
“He told farmers there are
over 300 uses for the little
plant, including 18 wavs to

The Rev. Robert A. Pruitt,
pastor of the A.M.E.
Metropolitan Church of
Washington, recalled at the
ceremony Dr. King’s strong ties
with the Jewish people and
Israel. “Martin Luther King
was great for his love of
cook the raw seed. In his
laboratory at Tuskegee
Institute, Carver developed
peanut linoleum, paint, dye,
medicine, beauty cream, shoe
polish, and shampoo. Food
uses include peanut cheese,
mayonnaise, shortening, chili
sauce, and mock chicken.
“His peanut soup is still
eaten today, but probably the
most dramatic food use for
peanuts was in peanut milk.
This Carver discovery is
credited with saving the lives of
thousands of African infants,
when no other food was
available to them.
The Farm Index article
noted that Carver’s work went
far beyond the peanut. He was
a teacher, agronomist,
botanist and an
award-winning painter.
The basis of his work with
USDA was the study of plant
fungi. In addition, he was
associated with the Division of
Agrostology , improving grasses
grown in the nation s
heartland. He worked with
USDA off and on until his
death in 1943.

Supports
Compensation
Bill
Senator Thomas Allgood of
Augusta has helped win Senate
approval of a bill that would
extend unemployment benefits
to employees of state and local
governments, including school
lunchroom workers and the
agricultural and domestic
workers.
The legislation (SB 202)
initially failed to pass the
Senate but upon
reconsideration it was amended
and approved by a vote of 47
to 8.
Allgood said the bill would
bring Georgia into compliance
with a recently passed federal
law.
“I am pleased my colleagues
in the Senate have voted
overwhelmingly to approve this
measure,” said Allgood,
adding, “I hope the House
members will vote likewise. ’
Officials say that if the state
does not comply with the
federal law it would cost
Georgia employers about 5250
million, of which ninety
million would be additional
money which is not going to
Washington now, but which
instead is given back to all the
employers for their good
ratings in keeping people
employed instead of laying
workers off.
