Day Care Centers -
Learn How To Look
It used to be that toddlers
stayed at home with mother.
But time, the economy and
the American work force has
changed. Millions of women
who once stayed at home in
the traditional roles of
housewife and mother are now
working in part-time or
full-time jobs.
For their pre-school children
this shift has meant a new
home away from home - the
day care center.
For a child this experience
can be stimulating or tedious,
depending on the center.
“What parents must do is
ask questions - lots of
questions - when they are
looking for a day care center
for their children,” says Linda
Baker, a licensing worker in the
metro Atlanta area for the
Georgia Department of Human
Resources.
“Day care centers should
offer a child more than
custodial care. There should he
a planned program of activities
that includes learning of
language, art, music, science
and development of muscle
coordination. Even babies need
competitors. She will compete
in the Miss Georgia Forestry
Pageant in June.
Cindy Lou’s hobbies include
sewing, hiking and cooking.
She is anticipating taking
courses in fashioning and
merchandizing at Augusta Tech
following her graduation.
The Siviks reside in Augusta.
June 1.
The center is located at the
comer of Ninth and Florence
Streets.
Registration dates for grades
one-twelve: will be announced
later.
stimulation and attention and
good day care centers will
provide these.”
Parents should inspect a day
care center thoroughly. Visit
the classrooms and talk to the
teachers. Study the playground
area. Is it fenced in? Are the
rounds clean? Is the play
equipment sturdy?
“Look for cleanliness,” says
Mrs. Rose Walton the director
of an Atlanta day care center.
“Remember, this is where your
child is going to spend four to
eight hours a day, five days a
week. Look at the kitchens and
the bathrooms. Are they well
kept? Is your child’s
‘homeroom’ free from dust and
litter? Are toys put away when
not in use or just scattered
about the room?”
Nutrition plays a large part
in day care centers. Children
should be served a midmoming
snack, lunch and a
midaftemoon snack Most day
care centers make up their
menus a week in advance, so
don’t be shy in asking to see
them.

Prof. Elliot Skinner of
Columbia University: “What
Haley said is not new. Dußois
said it, Carter D. Woodson has
said it, and J.A. Rodgers. He
(Haley) placed it in context.
He also created jealousy and
embarrassment among whites.”
Prof. Eric Perkins, Temple

poetic license. It’s a picture of
slavery as he sees it." Prof. Eric
Foner, Princeton University:
‘“Roots’ is so popular among
whites because it shows a

adversity. The values of ‘Roots’
