Lowery, Southern Christian Leadership Conference acting president and board chairman, has wired President Carter giving full support to United Nations Ambassador Andrew' Young “in his efforts to sensitize our nation and the world to the devastating effects of racism - conscious and unconscious - in our society. “We cannot eliminate what we refuse to admit exists, and the fact is that racism is firmly Supreme Fashions gets bigger and better 'W- nB W 'Jr f N « J ?> 1 Henry Howard Blacks hold 2.6% of only public offices in the south Atlanta, Georgia - The number of public offices held by Black officials in the South has increased 2,857 percent since 1965, but the 2,129 Black seats held in 1977 represent only 2.6 per cent of the total 79,000 public offices in the region, according to the Voter Education Project (VEP). “The increase from 72 Black elected officials in 1975 to 2,129 today is all the more dramatic when you realize that we’re not just talking about numbers,” explained Archie E. entrenched in subtle and overt ways in all our economic and political structures," he said. “Andy gets wide publicity on what Blacks have said and known forever,” continued Dr. Lowery, “that all whites are influenced by an historical racist posture toward non-whites, particularly toward Blacks.” Racism must be “exposed, identified, and recognized" as a destructive force before we can effectively pursue the goals of When Henry Howaid opened Supreme Fashions in 1972 as the only Black-owned clothing store on Broad Street, he said he was confident that Augusta's Black community would support him. Today he says that support never came. “People who have to buy a pair of socks at least once of year, haven't," he said. But rather than be bitter. Howard said he is working to make his business better. He recently moved into a larger, more attractive building on die 900 block of Broad Street. His rent more than doubled. Allen, VEP administrative director. “We’re talking about Black mayors, legislators, law enforcement officials, school board members and other officials who are delivering services and producing creative programs from public offices never held by Blacks in this century.” “The resource of Black participation in politics, which has come into being primarily in the last decade, is one of the See “PUBLIC OFFICE" Page 5 P.O. Lowery accused certain elements of the press of using Young to try to create a political crisis for President Carter by making a headline of every comment uttered bv Ambassador Young. Lowery went on to say, “S.C.L.C. commends Vice President Mondale for his forthright statements regarding majority rule in southern Africa to tn changing location, Howard said he also hopes to change the image of the store. Contrary to popular opinion, the store does not carry high-fashion clothing.“We have one of the biggest selections of conservative name-brand suits in Augusta,” he said, adding that ministers and students get a 10 percent discount. It is impossible not to notice that much of our press downplayed our Vice President's statements while at the same time sensationalizing Young's statements about racism which have been forthright, courageous, and above all, truthful.” Command performance for Queen Elizabeth II Epic recording artists The Jacksons have just returned to the United States after a two and -a - half-week press promotional tour which included a special command performance for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11 of England The Jacksons traveled well over 20,000 air miles. The countries the group visited were London, England: Paris, France; Bremen, Germany; Amsterdam, Holland; and Glasgow, Scotland; the site of the command performance. The Jacksons were invited to participate in the affair along with some of the United Kingdom’s finest talent. It also featured three other American entertainers, David Soul, star of the television series. Starsky and Hutch, (now a vocalist); Shari Lewis, children’s television hostess; and country and western star Dolly Parton. The Jacksons have not appeared in England for nearly five years but their concert at London's Odeon Hammersmith Theatre was an instant sellout with a record breaking 1,000 SRO (standing room only) attendance. Outrage builds over treatment Nathaniel R. Jones, General counsel for the NAACP. recently pledged the “full resources” of the organization's legal department for the defense of the Wilmington 10 recently. Similarly, Black leaders in North Carolina government, business and educational circles including Floyd B. McKissick of Soul City, have spoken out in recent days questioning the fairness of the handling of 10 Mclntyre target of witch hunt Ihe Augusta Black Festival has been under lire since it received Federal Revenue Sharing monies last year. The attack has centered on tin* Festival's Chairman, Ed Mclntvre, hut the implications are much broader. The Richmond Counts Property Owners Association recently suggested that Mclnty re used Federal hinds alloted to the Black Festival to pay oil iiis personal debts. That charge is viscious. It not only questions the character oi Mclntvre. it also questions the character of board of directors which includes some of the most outstanding citizens in the Black community. \nd the charges should be viewed as an affront to the entire Black community . We think that Festival officials decided wisely in refusing to yield Io the Property Owners' demand to see tiie front and back of all Black Festival checks. The concert was televised throughout the United Kingdom. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is shown thanking The Jacksons after their performance. June 16, 1977 No. 7 of the Wilmington 10 civil rights workers currently incarcerated for a total of 282 years. All this increased support for the Rev. Ben Chavis and his nine codefendants, who were convicted in 1972 on alleged arson charges, has been brought about because of the most recent denial of their motion for a new trial by a Nortii Carolina Superior Court judge. Testimonies at the two week hearing included those of former prosecution witnesses Eric Junious, Jerome Mitchell and Allan Hall who all recounted committing peijury at the 1972 trial in exchange for promises of money, light sentences in unrelated criminal matters, jobs and a mini-bike (actually received by Eric Junious). Jones characterized the judge’s ruling as “hardcore discrimination”, saying that Editorial requires recipients of Revenue Sharing funds to humiliate itself before such a group as the Property Owners Association or newspapers. If the Richmond County Board of Commissioners should request the checks, fine. They should be submitted. But not until then. It should be remembered tiiat this is the same witch hunt team that tried to implicate Mclntvre in wrong-doing in Bel Air Hills Estates. We believe that they will he equally unsuccessful now as they were then in their attempt to smear Mclntv re and. indirectly,Hie Black community. It is <Mir opinion that the Revenue Sharing \dvisorv Board still serves and important function and should not be dissolved. While the County \ttornev has the right to determine the legality of tiie issuance oi tiie Revenue Sharing money, the Advisory Board still has the important responsibility of advising on tiie priority with which tin* funds should be alloted. 25e “Anytime a court, in the face of the kind of evidence presented, refuses to grant a new trial, he is compounding the original injustice”. Drawing a standing ovation from 500 persons attending a statewide NAACP meeting in Raleigh, N. C., he went on to criticize the Carter Administration for its attention to international human rights while ignoring the human rights violations in the United States.
