Interest soars at sperm banks
Worried about his family’s
finances, 28-y ear-old Mike
Puckhaber went to see his
banker in downtown Los
Angeles last spring. First he
gave the receptionist his
account number. Then an
officer led him down a long
hallway with his deposit.
But the room they entered
was not a steel vault filled with
locked boxes. It was a brightly
lit medical laboratory, and
Puckhaber bore his deposit in a
small jar-one of several
hundred sperm specimens
stored at the Tyler Clinic
Sperm Bank.
Puckhaber plans to have a
vasectomy soon and is storing

his sperm because, though he
and his wife say they have as
many children as they want, he
still believes “you can’t look
too far into the future.”
“Sperm banking is like
family insurance,” he says.
“We want to our
options, and mV surgeon told
me that right now sperm
banking is a better risk than
vasectomy reversal.
But sperm banking is, at
best, a controversial form of
“fertility insurance.”
“We don’t recommend
sperm banking,” says Betty
Gonzalez of the Association
for Voluntary Sterilization
(AVS) in New York. “They
have not been proven over a
long enough period of time.
There is a serious question of
reduced sperm motility after
two or three years-so it is not
clear whether a sperm bank
depositor could father children
with thawed sperm.”
Sperm “motility” is best
described as “wiggle
-power”-the ability of the
individual sperm to wiggle its
way up to the uterus and
fertilize the female egg. Only
highly motile sperm can cause
a pregnancy.
Dr. Keith Smith of the
University of Texas Medical
School recently reported a
pregnancy rate of 73 per cent
using fresh sperm, and a 61 per
cent rate for sperm that is
frozen, then thawed after a
short period of storage.
“Good post-thaw motility
remains for about 12 months,”
says Smith “then motility
declines progressively.”
However, Smith found that
some samples of thawed sperm
had lost so much motility that
they were “of limited use for

artificial insemination.” Other
authorities estimate that 50 per
cent of motility is lost as a
result of freezing, then
thawing.
But the 50 per cent motility
loss “is not always true,” says
Steve Broder, spokesman for
the Tyler Clinic Sperm Bank
here. Broder cites medical
journal reports of pregnancies
caused by thawed sperm kept
frozen for up to five years.
Fear of genetic damage
possibly resulting in deformed
offspring has hindered wider
use of stored sperm. But
Broder believes that fear is
groundless.‘The freezmg and
thawing tend to kill off injured
or defective sperm, while the
healthy ones survive,” he says.
Sperm banks were not
originally developed for
pre-vasectomy men who
desired “fatherhood
insurance,” but as a service to
men about to undergo
radiation or drug treatments
for cancer- treatments that
may result in sterility or
genetic damage.
“I was diagnosed as having
Hodgkins disease a few
months ago,” says a 21-year-old
student at the University of
California- Berkeley.
“Chemotherapy will make me
sterile. I think sperm banking is
the best thing for me to do
under the circumstances. Who
knows how the treatments will
go?”
Sperm banks have also
helped men who have
oligospermia, or low sperm
count. Short-term storage can
be used to concentrate sperm
and increase the chance of
pregnancy.
NEW ACCOUNTS - Sperm
banking by pre-vasectomy men
is relatively recent. The Tyler
Clinic has been freezing sperm
for research purposes for 15
years, but its commercial bank
opened in 1969.
The cost of sperm banking
varies. The Tyler Clinic charges
$l4O to open an account and
store for one year. Afterwards,
the fee is S4O per year.
“When sperm banks first
opened to the public,” AVS’
Betty Gonzalez says, “the
feeling was that they would
