Alvin Ailey returns to Atlanta
The world-famous Alvin
Ailey Ametican Dance Theater
is returning to Atlanta.
After thrilling area residents
for the last two years with
electrifying performances, the
Ailey Company will now share
its artistry on a more personal
level through a four week
residency that will encompass
dance workshops, master
classes, seminars, and
lecture-demonstrations as well
as public performances.
Sponsored by Dance
Atlanta, the residency began
on Sept. 6 and will end with
performances at the Atlanta
Civic Center Sept. 28 through
Oct 2.
For the first three weeks,
the company will prepare two
new pieces which will be
presented during the five-day
performances. Open rehearsals
and student matinees will allow
residents to get closely
involved with the progress of
the dancers and learn first hand
how new pieces are
incorporated into the
repertoire of a professional
company.
This long term residency is
an unprecedented effort by a
dance company to reach out to
an entire community as well as
to determine if a large
company can more
economically maintain itself by
preparing new works while on
extended tours in major cities.
To aid in exploring this
alternative means of support,
the National Endowment for
the Arts has awarded Dance
Atlanta a $70,000 grant, and
the Georgia Council for the
Arts has given a $14,000 grant.
The Alvin Ailey American
Dance Theater began in 1958,
and has grown into one of the
most popularly acclaimed
dance groups in the country.
With a lively yet graceful style
that has become their
trademark, the 26 dancers
move to the music and routines
of America’s finest composers
and choreographers.
An important goal of the
Ailey residency in Atlanta is to
allow dance enthusiasts and
local performers to have closer
relatives in attendance. Frank Seabrook and his wife,
Essie, are shown in the center.

With this aim in mind, senior
members from the Ailey
troupe will offer workshops for
intermediate and advanced
level dancers in Jazz, Ethnic,
Intermediate and Advanced
Modem Dance. The classes will
meet twice weekly at the
Northside School of
Performing Arts and at
Spehnan College in the Read
Hall Gymnasium. In addition,
master classes directed towards
beginning level dancers will be
conducted twice a week. Also
planned are seminars for
practicing choreographers,
dance designers, and
management and production
people.
A more far-reaching activity
for the general public will be
the lecture- demonstrations.
From September 7 through the

presentations each day. They
will be held at a variety of

Sickle Cell
to honor
Count Basie
Legendary Jazz giant Count
Basie will be honored by the
NATIONAL Association for
Sickle Cell Disease (NASCD) at
a benefit dinner to be cohosted
by the Sickle Cell Disease
Research Foundation
(SCDRF), on Wednesday,
September 21.
Basie will receive the
NASCD’s Award of Distinction
that evening, and the
entertainment dinner, which is
open to the public, will be held
at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel,
Beverly Hills.
Count Basie and his
orchestra have been in the
forefront of jazz artistry for 42
years. The Count’s driving
piano style and dynamic
arrangements have markedly
influenced jazz musicians and
such singers as Joe Williams,
Frank Sinatra, and Jimmy
Rushing.
Basie is being paid tribute by
the NASCD and the SCDRF
for his personal commitment
to humanitarian causes.
The Tribute to Basie will be
the third annual entertainment
benefit dinner conducted by
the NASCD and marks the first
time that their pioneer
chapter, the SCDRF, will
co-host the star-studded event.
Jazz greats Ray Charles and
Ella Fitzgerald were previous
