Editorial
Have money
will spend
We were extremely pleased to see the Downtown
Council sponsor the first annual Augusta Fall Festival
Saturday with the proceeds going to the Concerned
Mothers Club breakfast program to feed needy
youngsters.
While there are few causes they could have chosen
that would be more deserving, we think that this
effort goes beyond merely supporting a worthy cause.
To be sure, there is the hope that activities such as
this will bring shoppers back into the downtown area.
But beyond that there is the fact that this is one of
the few tangible examples of a merchant-sponsored
project with the Black community was the primary
beneficiary.
The idea for this project, according to our
information, originated in a conversation between
newsman Jay Mann and Jackie Hyman, a young
model. Jackie reportedly challenged Jay Mann to do
something to help the Concerned Mothers.
Jay Mann and Ray Raymond, president of the
Downtown Council, arranged a series of
organizational meetings, and the show was on the
road.
Although a great many people put in an awful lot
of work to make the Festival a success. The
enthusiatic efforts of the persons mentioned above
can hardly be exaggerated. And their enthusiasm was
contagious.
The behind-the-scene organizing saw organizations
like the Southern Christian Leadership Conference
working hand-in-hand with merchants they might just
as easily be picketing.
We hope that the Fall Festival is but a small step in
the long march toward sustained interracial
cooperation. And while we applaud this effort,
initiated by whites, we hope that the Downtown
Council will show the same kind of initiative and
enthusiasm in hiring, training and promoting Blacks
enabling them to properly feed their families thereby
giving the Concerned Mothers Club permanent relief.
Such initiative is clearly in the interest of the
downtown merchants. The overwhelming majority of
the downtown consumers are Black. And to the
extent that Black buying power is increased, to the
same extent there will be increased spending in the
downtown area. If there is ever to be a revitalizing of
the downtown area, Black people will do it.
It makes good sense for the merchants to put
money into the Black community, for it is the Black
community that spends its money downtown. The
problem is that Black people have relatively little
money to spend.
The merchants and the Black community are
capable of largely solving each other’s economic
problems. We hope that the Fall Festival is just the
beginning of a mutually profitable relationship.

King Tut exhibit
insults Blacks
‘‘Treasures of
Tutankhamum” is a big rip-off
and national insult to every
Black American! That’s the
conclusion - in fact that’s
startling cover headline - in the
current issue of SEPIA
magazine.
Almost a million viewers
stood in long lines to view
“Treasures of Tut” when the
► exhibit was in the nation’s
capital. Another million filed
past the treasures of Tut in
Chicago, some of them having
traveled from distant points in
the midwest. In the South,
people are flocking in droves to
New Orleans where the Tut
show will be seen through
December. Los Angeles already
is bracing for record crowds
when Tut arrives early in 1978.
From there it goes to Seattle
and finally to New York City.
But why is such a popular
exhibit a rip-off and an insult?
The answer comes in a long
article written by Legrand H.
Clegg II and Lisbeth Gant,
instructors at Compton
Community College in
25*
assumed the presidency of
Boggs June 16, he said he
wanted to make it a “light
house” educational institution
and to develop it into a
“fiscally sound educational
enterprise.”
A former Olympic wrestler,
Dr. Watson served previously as
general manager for Wheeler
Airlines, a Black-owned
commuter air-carrier
headquartered in Raleigh, N.C.
A pilot himself, he intended to
integrate flying into the
curriculum at Boggs Academy.
He earned three university
degrees, including the Ph. D. in
educational administration,
from Northwestern University.
Califormia. They are authors of
a scholarly monograph on early
Black rulers of the world as
well. Their carefully
documented SEPIA article
points out that substantial
evidence exists that King
Tutankhamum - whose name
usually is shortened to Tut -
was Black. At least if he were
alive in the USA today we’d
refer to him as Black. The
authors quote source after
source, white scholars and
Black, who conclude that Tut
and Tut’s ancestors were Black.
In fact, they say “Early
residents of Egypt called the
place KEMIT, land of die
Blacks.’”
The insult, as well as the
rip-off, comes from the fact
that the exhibitors, all of those
noted museums as well as die
old Nixon-Kissinger team who
first lined up the exhibit, have
not pointed out to the millions
of vierers that what they see is
a collection of valuable relics
