Rev. McCoy leaves church
to become Navy Chaplain
Augusta has lost one of its
promising Black Baptist
pastors, but the city’s loss will
be the Navy’s gain.
The Rev. Michael L. McCoy,
26, has received a six-year
commission as a chaplain in the
U 5. Navy. He will have the
rank of lieutenant.
McCoy, pastor of the
250-member Mt. Olive Baptist
Church until he recently
resigned, left Sunday for
Newport, R.L for eight-weeks
of training in the chaplain’s
school there. From there he
will go to Camp Le Jeune,
N.C., to begin his service.
In an interview prior to his
departure, McCoy explained
his decision to join the Navy.
“There is a critical need for
Black chaplains in the armed
services as a whole. Os the 714
chaplains in the Navy, for
instance, there are only 13
active Black chaplains,” he
said.
He said he had been
“looking into (the situation)
for a period of time” and
concluded that he would be
able to “minister to a wider
group of people and represent
my whole Black race in the
ministry” by going into
military service.
McCoy will have a choice of
serving three years of active
duty, followed by another
three in the reserves, or of
serving the entire time in active
duty.
He admits there is always
the possibility of war breaking
out because the UJS. does more
to prepare for war than to
prevent it. “There will always
be war,” he said.
Does that possibility give
rise to a conflict of interest for
a man of the cloth? McCoy
does not think so.
“Our God is a God of war. I

"Prayer... haspower” —James 5:16
1. Prayer is asking. It is a
petition. In former years, the
term prayer was used to signify
any petition. When we petition
God, we have loads of
co-signatories. We are joined in
our petitions with all of the
“angels and arch-angels and all
the company of heaven.” As
the hymnist reminds us, “far
more oe’r thee are watching
than human eyes may know.”
2. Prayer is seeking. It is
looking unto Jesus, the author
and finisher of our charted life
in God. It is a glimpse... no
matter how fleeting... at God’s

see our God as one who moves
in sometimes violent ways,” he
said.
McCoy, himself quite young,
thinks young Blacks are now
turning to religion. “They are
looking, searching, for some
kind of answers to today’s
issues and problems.”
Even many of those who left
the church during the latter
own face. It is a seeking after
the road signs which lead
toward the ramparts of heaven.
Prayer is the seeking of our
path toward the fullfillment of
our life in God.
3. Prayer is knocking. It is a
ringing of the bell at heaven’s
door. Prayer is like a soft
musical buzz in heaven’s ear to
alert God’s host of helpers of
our hopes, our needs and
dreams.
Prayer, my brothers and
sisters, has, as James the Lord’s
brother reminds us, “power!”

60s and early 70s are returning,
he believes.
“I think trained ministers is
the key,” he said.
McCoy explained that
ministers who have received
formal training are able to
counsel individuals better,
emphasizing “the total

sociology and on such

problems as unemployment.
The minister, who had
pastored at Mt. Olive since
September 1974, is the son of
the Rev. and Mrs. R.L. McCoy.
He graduated from Lucy
Laney, obtained a bachelor of
arts degree in history at Paine
College in 1973 and a master
of divinity degree three years
later at the Interdenomi
national Theological Center in
Atlanta.
McCoy is married to the
former Sharon Ann Rogers and
has a three-year-Old daughter,
Seandra Lenore.
He has been active in the
community, serving as
president of the Martin Luther
King Jr. Survival Coalition, a
local Black rights organization
which stresses employment for
Black people. He has also been
affiliated with the local chapter
of the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference
(S.C.L.C.)
To Black youth, McCoy has
a message. “As Black young
people we have to understand
that the struggle is still a part
of us. There is still much work
to do. We can’t feel contented,
that nobody cares, or that the
white man owes us. We must
go out and get these things for
ourselves.”
He advocates unity among
Blacks to put pressure on
business and government
officials. “The day is over for
favoring us because we are
Black, but where we are
qualified, give it to us,” he
said.
McCoy said God is with the
Black race. “He is inherent in
any people who are oppressed,
and I think He’s part of the
liberation process. We must
follow His principles so we can
achieve liberation.”
