Mrs. Ocie Johnson
Nurse of the Year
In observance of National
Nurse Week, Phi Chi Chapter
of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc.
honored Mrs. Ocie Johnson as
Phi Chi’s Nurse of the Year, at
a banquet held recently at the
Thunderbird Inn.
The banquet also marked
the first anniversary of the Phi
Chi Chapter.
Mrs. Johnson graduated
from the University Hospital
School of Nursing in 1947 and
retired on March 4, 1978.
She received the B.S. degree
in 1955 and M.S.N. degree in
1958 from the University of
Maryland.
She was a supervisor in
obstetrics and acting director
of nurses at Provident Hospital
in Baltimore, Md. For three
years, she was affiliated with
the visiting Nurses Association
in Baltimore.
From 1956-1962 she was
employed by the Health

County. In 1962 she became
the only Black instructor at the
University Hospital School of
Nursing.
In 1964, she was the first
Black to hold an executive
position at Talmadge Hospital
in the Maternal and Infant Care
project. She initiated and
implemented this program and
held the position until 1970.
She became affiliated with
the Family Planning Project
where she became chief of the
Outreach Family Program at
Medical College of Georgia in
1970.
Upon retirement Mrs.
Johnson has been recognized
by the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority
as its Citizen of the Year, and
received a plaque from the
State Wide Patient Advisor
Committee in recognition of
devoted service in the area of
consumer participation.
