WALTER
BURRELL
From Hollywood
Hello people . . .
Outrage is snowballing throughout Black Holly
wood over the casting of white actor Richard Thomas
to star as the Egyptian boy King Tut in an upcoming
movie which has grown out of the unprecedented re
sponse to the King Tut exhibition touring the country.
Hollywood has traditionally cast white actors as Black
historical figures; for example, Gina Lollobrigida as
the Black Queen of Sheba and blue-eyed Elizabeth
Taylor as Africa’s Cleopatra, but Blacks had little or
no voice with which to influence such castings.
A few years ago a fiery Black writer named Louise
Meriwether and I decided to try and halt production
on a proposed movie version of pre-Civil War hero
Nat Turner. No one gave us a chance in hell of actually
foiling the film plans, but Ms. Meriwether’s exhaust
ing efforts paid off and the loud outcry we made
caused the picture to be shelved.

J.J. WALKER PAM GRIER RICHARD THOMAS
That’s exactly what I and other concerned Blacks
here in Hollywood and across the nation are going to
attempt with the Tut film. Tut was a decidedly black
skinned, thick-lipped African type who resembled in
no way the thoroughly Caucasian Thomas, who
starred as John-Boy on the H'altons TV series. Casting
Thomas is a direct slap in the faces of all Black actors.
It is a blatant statement that no Black actor is capable
of doing the part. You can bet you’re going to hear a
lot more on this in these pages.
Down cupid’s beat: John Amos’ long-time lady
friend, Ella, is now officially his wife. Richard Pryor’s
wife Debbie has exited to make room for a rekindling
of his passion for the lovely Pam Grier, who many of
Pryor’s friends say is “the best thing that ever hap
pened to Richard.” And Tina Turner’s new flame is
Henry Weinberg, the automobile dealer who was
much in the press as the ex-lover of Elizabeth Taylor.
Tina has said publicly on more than one occasion that
white men really know how to treat Black women.
You read it here first: Danny Beard is leaving The
sth Dimension to go solo. Danny has reportedly been
disappointed with the progress (or rather, the lack of
progress) made by the group.
The hookers plying their fleshy trade on Hollywood
Boulevard these days have changed their wardrobe a
bit. They’re now sporting tee-shirts with “I’m Expen
sive, But I’m Worth It!” across the front.
J.J. Walker is reportedly more than a little upset
abqut what Esther Rolle is planning to do to his char
acter on the “Good Times” series now that she’s
back —with a hell of a lot more power than she had
before. Esther has stated publicly that she plans to axe
J.J.’s part considerably and Walker, according to
other cast members, is not taking it too well.

Apollo Theatre re-opening brings ‘Good Tinies’ stars
The recent re-opening of the
world famous Apollo Theatre
in Harlem brought a celebrity
turnout which would have
rivaled any Hollywood
premier. For the gala,
percussion maestro, Ralph
MacDonald starred. Recording
artist, Bobbi Humphrey was
one of the special highlights of
the show. Later she met with
Esther Rolle, the popular
Evans family mom on CBS
TV’s “Good Times,” who has
just returned to that show and
Ralph Carter. This was Ralph’s
(who plays the son on the
show) and Esther’s first
reunion since Esther’s return to
the show.
According to Bobbi
Humphrey, whose career is
surging with the success of her
chart-topping album,
“Freestyle” and the single,
“Homemade Jam,” she’s all set
for the “good times,” too.
