From Hollywood
Hello people . . .
A couple of years ago Eletha (Mrs. Peter) Finch
shocked the audience of the Academy Awards when
she accepted her deceased husband’s Oscar and every
one saw that she was Black. Well, the petite Jamaican
lady has become the darling of the Hollywood social
set, making every ‘in” affair in her personally mon
grammed Rolls Royce.
One of the briefest romances in the history of Holly
wood was that between “Roots” Emmy winner Lou
Gossett and Max Julien’s ex, Vonetta McGee. No
sooner was Lou announcing that the gorgeous Vonetta
had moved into his secluded beach pad than she had
plopped her belongings down in the San Fernando
Valley (California) home of her equally attractive
sister.

BEN VEREEN DENICE NICHOLAS JIM BROWN
Singer Doobie Gray must be out of his mind. Gray
has announced plans to tour the South African towns
of Durban, Port Elizabeth, Capetown and Johannes
burg. His naivete is appalling.
Idi Amin tried to get his foot into the door of Holly
wood’s’Black “in” group of stars, but all he got for
his efforts was a stubbed toe. He sent a prominent
Black American Muslim to town to collect a group of
Black Stars for an intended junket to Uganda. Jim
Brown, Brock Peters, Denice Nicholas, Raymond St.
Jacques, Clifton Davis, Ted Lange and Albert Pop
well were among the 40 stars invited. But then people
started dying by the hundreds in Uganda and the celeb
rities became more than a little nervous about the pros
pect of making the trip in Amin’s private jet (what if
one of his many detractors decided to bomb the
plane?) and just about everyone pulled out.
All of Hollywood is abuzz over the published report
of Jim Brown having been convicted on misdemeanor
battery charges for beating and choking a golfing
partner in Los Angeles last year. Big Jim is scheduled
for sentencing June 28 and could get six months in jail
and a fine. What the Black show biz types are cackling
about, however, is the fact that Jim’s the chairman for
the much publicized NAACP Image Awards. Some
are saying that because of this personal problem,
Brown should perhaps step down from his position. I
think that it would be wrong for Jim to step down.
He’s done a better job of heading the Awards than any
of the past chair-persons throughout the history of the
event.
If you see a lot more Black names in the production
credits for the upcoming new 14 hours of “Roots II,”
a lot of the credit is to be given to Ben Vereen (Emmy
nominee for his role as Chicken George). Vereen in
sisted that more Blacks be employed as part of his
agreement to sign on as an actor.
