A precious treasury of God’s thoughts—
His Book divine!
1 t'evel in each sacred page...
In every line.
Therein I see the grace of God:
’Tis there I find
His peace, that brings tranquility
To heart and mind.
And woven through each chapter runs
A scarlet thread
Symbolic of my Saviour and
' The blood He shed!
Fraught with great comfort, every psalm
With shepherd’s touch
Leads me to pastures new...to Him
1 love so much!
I find therein the love of God,
His love is mine!
A precious treasury of God’s thoughts...
This Book divine!

S3O million spent on Gospel
NEW YORK - Gospel music
is at the peak of its popularity
and last year attracted an
audience that paid S3O million
at the boxoffice and in record
purchases, according to an
agent who books many of its
headliners into churches,
concert halls and theatres.
Henry Nash, president of the
Subrena booking agency,
reported that after a decade of
benign existence, the happy,
joyous and cheerful sounds of
church music is witnessing a
revival. Recently a gospel show
at Harlem’s new Apollo theatre
drew 6000 persons over a three
day period.
Handling such artists as the
Rev. James Cleveland, Shirley
Caesar, Pilgrim Jubilaires and
the Mighty Clouds of Joy, he
said that the new interest in
gospel has brought about a rise
in salaries for the singers. At
onetime, he pointed out, few
individuals or groups earned
more than SSOO nightly.
Broadcasting
anniversary
to be held
The Greater Mt. Canaan
Baptist Church will observe its
ninth broadcasting anniversary
Nov. 5, at 11 a.m.
The guest speaker will be the
Rev. James Walker from Fort
Gordon.
The Rev. Walker is a native
of Columbia, S.C. The Rev.
Nathaniel Irvin is the pastor.
Deacon Charles Smith is
chairman of the broadcasting
program.
Tyrone J. Butler
But now Cleveland
commands SIO,OOO fees and
Caesar, known as the Queen of
Gospel, earns $5,000 nightly.
Even relatively unknown
groups work for no less than
SSOO per appearance, he
added.
“Inflation and the rising
costs of transportation,
costumes and musicians has
ended the days of fly-by-night
promoters who milked these
performers of their talents. In
the old days promoters often
disappeared before the
concerts ended with all the
money, stranding the singers.
“Today’s gospel audiences
are more discriminating and
demand top performances.
They won’t stand for sloppy
dressed singers ill prepared to
go onstage.”
One of the highlights of the
recent Apollo show was the
eastern debut of Gene Viale.
Nash, signed him to a
three-year contract, said the

audience was surprised that a
white person could sing this
traditional Black church music
with the fevor and spirit of a
“soul brother.”
Formerly a member of Rev.
Cleveland’s group, Viale at
each show walked offstage to
an ovation. On the basis of his
showing here several promoters
signed him for a southern tour
next month.
Record firms are also
displaying renewed interest in
the many soloists and groups.
While few gospel records are
over night million sellers like
rock and roll they nevertheless
achieve that number over a
period of years such as the late
Mahalia Jackson’s records that
are still in demand.
Modernizing their acts,
gospel singers have added
musicians to lend body to their
songs. Most of them today
travel in modern buses, unlike
years gone by when they rolled
up in broken down school
ouses.
Mrs. Irene Ware Johnson,
the nation’s foremost gospel
authority and a Mobile, Ala.
disc jockey, is often credited
with gospel’s revival. Her
knowledge of who’s who in the
trade is widely sought by
record companies and
promoters anxious to acquire
the top boxoffice attractions.
