CRAIG

From Hollywood
Who would have believed that chubby Fred Berry
(better known as Rerun of the What's Happening"
series) would be jumping out of Jayne Kennedy’s
birthday cake? Well, it happened at Tinseltown’s
Circus Disco when Leon Issacs Kennedy hosted a super
birthday party for his beautiful wife Jayne, the first
Black woman NFL television sportscaster.
The guest list read like who’s who in Hollywood.
We spotted Rev, Ike sitting on the fifty yard line
watching disco dancers Linda Hopkins, Kareem Ab
dul Jabbar, Vonetta McGee, Shirley Washington,
Rosalind Cash, Lonette McKee, Susanne Vikstrom,
Cleavon Little, Jim Brown, Kellee Patterson, Gene
Russell, Lynn Moody, Bernadette Stanis, Lawrence
Hilton-Jacobs, Ella Edwards, Scherrie Payne (Freda
was working in the Carribean), Ray Vitte and lots
more. The Rams were well represented by the presence
of Sonny Collins, Cullen Bryant and Pat Thomas who
spent part of the night watching NFL film clips on the
large-screen TV set up on the patio.

One of the evening’s highlights was the appearance
of new super-singer Patti Williams, who later asked
Linda Hopkins to join her in a birthday song for
Jayne. The bartenders dressed as clowns, magicians
thrilled the crowd with magical feats and the acrobats
jumped all night as Tinseltown enjoyed one of its
famous get-down parties.
With its membership more than one million strong,
the National Council of Negro Women honored Par
mount Picture’s top Black woman executive, Sandy
Livingston, as the Outstanding Woman of the Year
1978 at Los Angeles’ plush Airport Sheraton Hotel.
Sandy made the grade behind the lights and cameras.
Gospel singer Millie Foster arrived from New York
wearing that four carat ring she received from a white
stranger while performing her solo bit on Broadway.
Millie tells me his appearance on stage alarmed her in
the beginning, but he quietly gave her the ring without
a word and departed. The gift, valued at more than
S4OOO, caused much jealousy backstage with two of
Millie’s co-workers.
The veil of mystery that surrounds the group Kiss
and member Gene Simmons was raised just a little
when Simmons stated that he and Cher are just good
friends and that their living together is not a heavy ro
mance. Simmons stated that Kiss has been successful
because it’s first a business venture, second, a fantasy
entertainment and third, a band. Gene estimates that
his net worth is about 300 million dollars.

Marilyn and Billy shine on
As soon as you hear the
opening strains of “Shine on
Silver Moon” you know the
artists performing this hit
single are true professionals.
And when you find out that
the dynamic duo of Marilyn
McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. are
responsible for the sound, you
easily understand the
undeniable professional touch.
“Shine on Silver Moon” is
the first single release from
Marilyn and Billy’s debut
Columbia album entitled -
what else? - “Marilyn & Billy.”
The title of the album says it
all “Marilyn & Billy” is simply
Marilyn and Billy at their best.
“Our long range objective,
says Marilyn, “is to develop
and establish ourselves as a
top-notch husband and wife
team. Then we intend to
explore solo careers on records
and film. We’re open to a lot of
different avenues but the most
important thing is that we’ll
always be together. ”
After listening to the
polished sound that only this
couple could produce, it’s
again understandable why they
would always want to be
together. But “Marilyn &
Billy ” is more than a statement
of togetherness: it’s a solid
musical entry in a career
already distinguished by gold
records, Grammy Awards and
international recognition from
as far away as Tokyo (where
they were honored with grand
prize in Tokyo’s prestigious
Annual Music Festival in
1977).

MURAL to depict scenes from Augusta's history
Bank to erect mural
Citizens and Southern National Bank announced plans
Thursday to paint a 124-foot-long. 12-foot-high freestanding
mural at 7th and Reynolds streets depicting highlights of Au
gusta’s past and present.
Requests for local bids on the painting went out this weds,
but no final cost estimates are available, bank marketing
director Mary Adams said.
Twelve cubes, each about 10 feet square, will trace the
town's development. “We wanted to catch the flavor of the
city more than focus on any one person or place. ’ Mrs. Ad
ams said.
In sequence, the mural depicts Augusta as an Indian trail
end, a stopping place for Spanish explorers and an early Bri
tish settlement. Following the town’s development, the cubes
show the river and fort and the cotton which helped establish
Augusta as a flourishing trade center.
The Civil War and the Reconstruction period, followed by
the “Augusta” steamboat era represent the ups and downs in
the town s growth. Highlighting modem Augusta are cubes
representing the “Garden City,” the rich architectural heri
tage, the medical community and the Master's golf tourna
ment.

Marilyn and BiDy
A major reason for Marilyn
and Billy s success since leaving
their heralded group, The Fifth
Dimension, in 1975 is the
happiness they project.
“People hope we have an
answer to all the confusion
between men and women
today,” Marilyn beams
proudly. “I’m very flattered
that they look to our marriage,
hoping to come across the
element that makes it work.”
“And it’s so simple,”
interjects Billy. “It’s just one
simple element: respect! We
respect each other
tremendously. From the
beginning I could see that
Marilyn was serious and i
admired her ability in music.
Gradually the attraction just
grew and grew.”
