put self above teanj
From Pittsburg Courier
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- New
York Yankees first baseman
Chris Chambliss says Reggie
Jackson caused the firing of
manager Billy Martin and says
Jackson puts himself above the
club to the deteriment of the
world champions.
“If there is no Jackson,
there would have been no
trouble,” Chambliss said.
Sporting a cast on his right
hand, he added Mttrtin
probably would have survived
the season had it not been for
Jackson playing his problems
off tire manager and owner
George Steinbrenner.
The first baseman
acknowledged that Jackson
helped the Yankees retain their
world championship but said
the flamboyant rightfielder
designated hitter is not the key
to the team’s success.
“That’s what Reggie wants
you to believe,” Chambliss

“I think people are just sort
of sitting back and looking at
it,” center director Joyce Watts
said. “I don’t sense any real
fear. The Black people are
disappointed because naturally
we don’t like it see this kind of
thing. Hopefully it will end
very soon. But as of yet I don’t
think it has produced any
fear.”
At a Klan rally between
Cullman and Hanceville, a
17-year-old high school junior
from Birmingham appeared
nervous as he addressed the
crowd. He was there to ask
Klan support for a youth group
he and others had formed at
his 60 percent Black high
school.
“You could say, maybe,
we’re working close with the
Klan,” he admitted. “1 believe
the things we learned in history
class about the Supreme
Court’s old separate but equal
ruling. 1 believe that Blacks
should go to their own schools
and that whites should go to
their own school and be able to
stay away from the Blacks if
they want to.”
As the rally drew to an end,
about 40 Klansmen in full
regalia took up positions
around the cross with flaming
torches. They saluted the
burlap-wrapped cross and
marched in to ignite it at the
base. Thirty feet of flame
erupted into the cold Alabama
night air. (Part II next week)

“means a lot to our team,”
Whitney Van Cleve said on the
eve of White’s selection. “Not
only does it speak highly for
White and his remarkable
performance for us this season,
but it also represents the
caliber of the football played
here at Albany State. It could
not happen to a finer person,”
the Rams’ head football coach
added.
Despite the team’s lack
luster record this season,
White, who shed more than 20
pounds from his playing weight
of a year ago to increase his
speed and quickness, had a
banner season. In addition to
his 47 solo tackles and 23
assists, he plucked off three
interceptions and returned two
of them for touchdowns. He
has also been credited with one
sack, three blocked
kicks/punts, and four pass
deflections.
