ear Sirs:
I have had the pleasure of reading the
tide, Black Identity and World Litera
re, which was presented in your August,
!, Vol. 3, No. 8 issue. (Living in the Wash
gton, D.C. Metropolitan area, I read the
’ashington Informer.) So rarely do we
>me across an article as educational,
formative and well written as this one. 1
id heard through conversation that a
ack Pope had existed. Through brief
search, I came across no mention of this
ict in the history books in the community
National libraries. Black librarians were
lystified by my inquiries. Even those who
ere “Catholics” felt that my efforts were
i vain. A black Pope didn’t exist. Reading
lis article pointed out that he had indeed
listed, in fact he was Melchiades. His
aptizing Constantine helped put in per
>ectiveas to when in history he was Pope,
fore articles such as this one should be
ritten. I do consider myself a historian
nd an educator. I feel it is far time for
lany of “us” to come out of the New
Dark (or lightless) Ages,” that we black
nd third world peoples have lived in. We
tould learn of our black identity and
ecome aware of the truths, as we may set
side our national folklore, “Washington
ever told a lie,” history.
Again, thank you and I look forward to
tore educationally informative articles in
ne near future.
Sincerely,

HILDREN
“How does it happen that little children,
night-eyed and bushy-tailed, all clean,
>repped-up and polished and wide awake,
>oing out on the first day of school into the
eal world to study and learn are six years
ater throwing rocks at that school? Why is
hat? When is their motivation killed? Built
übliminally into the first, second and third
grade books are the words ‘ghetto’ and
slum’ and ‘urban renewal’ and ‘taxes.’
What are kids educated for? How to get
welfare? How to get to court and back?
How to get to the methadone clinic? How
lo sign checks?”
