Ministers ask Busbee to increase welfare
Five leading black ministers
representing nearly one million
Georgia Christians recently
called upon Gov. George
Busbee and the General
Assembly to approve a
substantial increase in aid to
families with dependent
children benefits.
At a State Capitol press
conference, the ministers, led
by Bishop Joseph Coles Jr.,
head of the Christian
Methodist Episcopal (CME)
church in Georgia, call for
approval of the budget request
submitted by the Georgia
Department of Human
Resources. The D.H.R.
MLK stamp to be
issued in January
The U.S. Postal Service said
recently that the 1979
commemorative stamp to
honor civil rights leader Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. will be
issued January 13 in Atlanta.
The first day of issue
ceremony for the 15-cent
stamp honoring Dr. King will
take place at the Ebenezer
Baptist Church in Atlanta.
Dr. King (1929-1968)
received the Nobel Peace Prize
in 1964 for his leadership of
the nonviolent struggle for
racial equality in the United
States.
The Postal Seivice said that
issuance of the King stamp on
Saturday, January 13, will
make it available at post offices
nationwide on January 15, the
50th anniversary of Dr. King’s
birth.
The stamp honoring Dr.
King is the second in the Black
Heritage USA series that
recognizes the contributions of
black Americans to the growth
and development of the United
States. The series began with

proposal would raise the
maximum benefit for a family
of four from $l4B to $193
monthly.
Bishop Coles said, “given the
facts that there are only four
states in the country which
provide less benefits than
Georgia, and that, for a family
of four, Georgia is at least
$l3O below the national
average, and since a family of
four in 1975 received sl6l per
month, but presently receives
only $l4B per month, we do
not feel that the proposed
increase is illogical, irrational
nor impractical.”

assistant pastor at Ebenezer
Baptist Church in Atlanta. Also
signing the statement were the
Rev. Cameron Alexander,
president of the
500,000-member Georgia
General Missionary Baptist
Convention, and the Rev.
Martin Luthej King Sr., pastor
emeritus at Ebenezer Baptist
Church. On Thursday, the five
men and met with Gov. Busbee
to discuss the proposed
A.F.D.C. budget.
According to Roberts, “Our
discussions with the governor
were confidential. However, we
did have the feeling he has not
yet made up his mind on the
issue.”
Gov. Busbee and D.H.R.
Commissioner Douglas Skelton
meet Monday to discuss the
proposal. Busbee is expected to
make his final budget decisions
within a week or ten days.
A.F.D.C. benefits now go to
about 205,000 people in
Georgia each month, with
three out of four recipients
being children. A typical
Georgia A.F.D.C. famfly, a
mother with two children,
receives the benefit for about
three years. Over 140,000
recipients have been dropped
from the A.FD.C. rolls since
1975.
