The "Good News of
Christmas" is being told in
many ways in our Augusta area
black churches. The Revs.
Andrew Johnson, pastor of
First Mount Moriah Baptist
Church: and Johnnie Bussey,
pastoi ol Greater Ml. Zion
Baptist Church, conceived and
presented the idea ot Sunday
night evangelistic services to be
shared by various
congregations bi-monthly.
The services now include
eight congregations who serve
as host church alternatively.
The pastors ol these churches
oiler. without pay. the
evangelistic preaching,
counseling, and tiadifional
worship singing to the almost
defunct Sunday night service.
The Rev Bussey stated dial
die new fellowship was
non-denominattonal, and has a
minimal operational stiucturc.
Illis, he said, allows lor
complete spontaneity. yet
directive effort toward the
idling ot die "Good News."

Tidings of great joy
And. 10. the Angels of
the Lord came upon diem
and the glory of the Lord
shone round about them:
and thev were so atraid.
\nd the \ngel said unto
them. "Fear not. for
liehold. I bring you good
tidings of great joy" which
shall be to all people. Luke
2:9. It).
This same message is
available for us today.
Don't be afraid. I bring
vou the best news ever
announced and it is for
everyone.
\s the Shepherds went
about their normal duty,
caring lor their Hock, thev
were greeted bv an
unexpected appearance of
Angels. Others who had
angels visitors had been
afraid. Jacob feared when
he saw the \ngels
ascending and descending
the steps of heaven. Moses
was I t ightened w hen God
spoke from the burning
hush as well as when God
spoke from Mt. Sinai in
giving the Command
ments. We can understand
the fear of the Shepherd as
they received the message
of God.
Today we have some
fears which should b*
minor but they paralyze
Some people used to fear that having their picture taken would capture their souls .
The Augusta News-Review - December 23, 1978
Dr. C.S. Hamilton
us. Some of us are afraid
we will not get what we
want for Christmas. We are
afraid what we give others
may not be accepted,
appreciated or it may not
be what others can use.
“Fear Not," we may not
get what we want but be
thankful for what we have.
If we give gifts from the
heart we need not worry
about whether it is
appreciated. We must give
with love, we must not
give to impress people.
Mary and Joseph had
their fears also. Mary had
fear of not finding favor
with God. Mary was not
living with a husband
wlii'ii the messenger told
her of the blessed event.
So lh«' promise of a
motherhood ex perience
seemed to be impossible or
undesirable. Joseph's fear
was that of what men will
say or think. He was afraid
of what the neighbors as
well as relatives would say
since he would Lie involvt'd
with a mother out of
wedlock. He was told not
to desert Mary for the
child was ol tli<* Holy
Spirit.
Christmas should be a
time of faith not fear.
Jesus' coming is a blessing.
Jut
not judgment. We must
always remember the
message is "Jesus Christ is
Lord.”
When the messenger
came he pit the shepherds
at ease and that same
message is tor us also,
“Fear Not,” and it
followed by the assurance,
"Behold. 1 bring you good
tidings of great joy," and
then, pressing the
outreach, he said, "which
shall be to all people." The
messenger was definite in
his direction. He directed
them to Jesus. “Ye shall
find the Babe." Our
message too must always
point to Jesus, the Lamb
of God.
The Christmas message
is "Fear Not.” Tomorrow
shall be as this day and
even more abundantly. We
need not fear what men
will sav about us but our
loyalty is to God. We need
not fear failing Io receive
favor of God, for his
mercy makes us righteous.
We tid'd not fear the good
news of salvation for it is
for us. If we put Christ
first we will find His grace
is sufficient.
Merry Christmas!
Happy New Year 1979.
