The Augusta News-Review - February 3, 1979
Sports Review
.By DavidM. Dupree -
The barrier has finally been
broken, and a big step was
made from Union, South
Carolina to Kansas. Willie
Jeffries made that step. Jeffries
is a native of Union, South
Carolina and a graduate of
South Carolina State. He began
his illustrious coaching career
at Grand High School in
Gaffney, South Carolina,
where he won several state
championships. From Gaffney,
he joined the coaching staff of
Johnny Majors at the
University of Pittsburg, where
he helped to develop one of
the finest running backs in
America, Tony Dorsett. After
serving laboringly as an
Assistant Coach at University
of Pittsburg, he was beaconed
to South Carolina State College
to serve as Head Football
Coach. During his tenure as
Head Coach at South Carolina
State College, they won four
M.E.A.C. Conference
Championships and
Co-Champions two times.

Carolina State: won 50; lost

a seat.
“When I saw on television
they had my coundilman, I
cried like a baby,” said Corine
Brown, chairman of the 9th
District Youth Group. “This is
what I call a lynching 1979
style.”
Later in the evening Hosea
Williams took the microphone
from the pulpit and stepped
down into the sanctuary,
pleading with the crowd to
donate money. Eaves, holding
a collection plate, stood at his
side.
The money will go for legal
fees for civil rights Attorney
Howard Moore - “the
Muhammad Ali of the
courtroom” - Williams
explained. Moore already has
agreed to take Langford’s case,
Williams said.
Councilman Howard, who
declared bankruptcy in
October 1977, was die first to
donate - signing over one of
his city council paychecks. The
Rev. Joe Boone also was
standing in the line of SIOO
contributors.
For at least 30 minutes
more, Williams kept on -
taking SSO contributions, then
$25, S2O and $lO, introducing
each contributor by name. He
prodded, joked and cajoled.
“If it weren’t for the power
of humor, this system would
have driven us crazy,” he
remarked at one point.
When Emma Darnell was
fired as commissioner of the
city’s Department of
Administrative Services,
Langford was there, Williams
said, “and when they fired
Reggie (Eaves), Arthur
Langford was there.”
In addition to the $4,040
collected Tuesday, Williams
said, $1 ,000 was collected last
Saturday, SI,OOO was donated

The six-month federal
investigation into Langford’s
activities related to last year’s
Southeastern Fair. Langford
was accused of extorting
money from the fair’s
operators by “actual and
threatened fear of economic
loss.”

record, because of outstanding
players during his tenure; for
example Arthur Prescott, a
graduate of Lucy C. Laney
High School. Prescott was an
all-state for two years, and in
the state of South Carolina,
player-of-the-week twice.
Prescott played in the first
Black All-Star Game, which
was played recently in New
Orleans.
Several players who served
under Jeffries tenure at South
Carolina State went on to
make a name for themselves in
Pro-Football, such as, Barney
Chavous of the Denver
Broncos; Henry Carson of the
New York Giants; Donnie Shell
of the Pittsburg Steelers.
Our hats are off to Wichita
State University for selecting
Jeffries as Head Football
Coach not because he is black,
but because of his great
football mind. We are certainly
hoping other schools will
follow Wichita State
University. We are wishing
Jeffries as much success at
Wichita State as he had at

jury three times when he was
asked about receiving the
money. Langford also is
accused of obstructing justice
by attempting to have another
grand jury witness testify
falsely.
If he is convicted, Langford
could be sentenced to as much
as 30 years in prison and fined
$25,000.
Langford told the crowd
Tuesday might that he couldn’t
discuss the specifics of the
charges against him since it was
a pending legal matter, but
“one day very soon, I’m going
to tell the real story.”

weeks of bickering between the
White House and Mr. Jordan,
who is one of the black leaders
closest to the President.
The Ingredients Are There’
Mr. Jordan stopped short of
predicting that the situation
faced by black Americans
would lead to urban rioting,
but he said several times, in
response to questions, that
“the ingredients are there - the
same ingredients that led to
riots in the 1960’s are there.”
The series of seven reports in
the 250-page annual report of
the league, which was put
together by league specialists,
university professors and
political analysists, were based
on Federal statistics, Mr.
Jordan said.
In the report on the
economy, Dr. Margaret C.
Simms, chairman of the
department of economics at
Atlanta University, wrote:
“The nation stands on the
brink of 1979 facing a possible
recession, certain inflation and
a pledge by the President to
hold the line on Federal
spending. With such a dismal

of business. If I had my way
I’d cut all these salaries in half
and let everybody work until
the end of the year.”
He promised to get back
with Burts this week.
Some agencies received help.
The Mini Theatre will be able
to retain its director and
assistant director although it
will still lose two employes.
Shiloh Comprehensive
Center will be able to keep two
CETA workers, and Albert said
he hoped something could be
“worked out” for another
79-year-old worker at the
center.
Robert Davis, director of the
Economic Opportunity
Authority, said the agency
received $175,000 last year for
a Weatherization Energy
Conservation Program for
disadvantaged people. In order
to keep the program going he
said he would have to have at
least four CETA workers.
James Dunn, personnel
director for the board of
education, sought to salvage
some of the 72 CETA workers
he is scheduled to lose. “There
is nothing I can do for the
board of education, the City of
Augusta or Richmond
County,” Albert said. “We’ve
done a little bit for people
agencies that would go out of
business. The county, board of
education and the city are not
going out of business.
“Everytime we help
somebody, we jeopardize being
able to pay the people we’re
keeping for the rest of the
year.”
In some instances the money
will last only until July, he said.

you can Ram how to use less energy.

Indeed, they will do well to

Dr. Robert B. Hill, the
league’s director of research,
who reported on the
“Economic Status of Black
Families,” said that “increasing
proportions of black families
are not ‘making it,’ ” and
predicted that “the black
community will experience an
even deeper economic
depression” this year.
Writing on education, Dr.
Madelon D. Stent, professor of
education at the City
University of New York,
observed that “despite the
gains made by blacks in the
United States, their
representation and educational
attainment compared to whites
is greatly unequal.”
Impact of Court Decision
The impact of the Supreme
Court’s decision last June in
the case of Alan Bakke, a white
who challenged the admissions
policies of the University of
California on the ground that
they gave preference to blacks.,
was covered in a report hy
Prof. James E. Jones Jr. of the
University of Wisconsin Law
School. The Court found
enough evidence in favor of
Mr. Bakke to compel colleges
and professional schools to
re-examine their policies and
make them more equitable.

decried the pessimism and

He urged Blacks to increase
