Man shot to death

An Augusta man was shot to
death at about 2 a.m. Sunday
at Krystal’s on Walton Way.
Police identified the man as
Roman Josey, 25, of 1516
Wooten Road.
Officers said they found
Josey lying on the floor with
gunshot wounds under the left

the left ear.
He was pronounced dead on
arrival at University Hospital.
Earl Ernest Mcßride, 40, of

Their multi-million dollar suit,
the first of its kind in the

country.

Augusta police records show
that a 26-year-old woman was
raped in her home about 7:30
a.m. Sunday morning.
Two of the rapes, she said,
occured in the city. The others
the scene with a .32 Colt pistol
with four live rounds and two
spent shells.
A witness at the scene said
the two men argued,
apparently about a woman, as
they waited to be served at the
restaurant.
Suddenly, Mcßride
“backhanded him and shot him
twice.” the witness said.
Mcßride was said to be a
bodyguard for singer James
Brown.

OFFER I COULDN’T REFUSE
tn 1972, Slaughter

That “offer,” as he understood
it, included promises of tutors,

Detective Sgt. T.W. Carr said
the woman was asleep in a

The man ordered the woman

tied her up and raped her three

He later tried to make her

the man put the pistol to her

The gun clicked once. Then he

Ray Charles make history
The News-Review wishes to congratulate Ray
Charles and James Brown on their history making
achievements during the past week.
We were really quite pleasantly surprised that the
Georgia Legislature voted to make the song
“Georgia” the official state song. While it should
i not be shocking in this day and time that a state
song would be named after a black native son. it is
still noteworthy when one considers that the same
legislature refuses to honor another native son,
Martin Luther King, with a state holiday, although
his achievements for the betterment of mankind
surpass that of any man in this century and
perhaps in the history of this country.
We franklv do not fully understand the
; significance of Janies Brown’s recent achievement
becoming the first soul-singer to perform in the
; Grand Ole Opry. However, those in “the business”
recognize it as an historical event, and we
congratulate him.

has no skeletons
The casket company is alive
and well, but is hiding no
skeletons, according to a State
Department of Labor
investigation into
“inconsistencies” in a
reportedly nonexistent casket
company which trained GET A
workers on a Comprehensive
Employment and Training Act
grant.
Although a news conference
was held Wednesday at which
CETA administrator Michael

wrongdoing was uncovered,"
two of the principals in the
casket company were not

Harvey Johnson, chairman
of the board of the casket

years, on the advice of his
coach, consisted of such
toughies as beginning
basketball, badminton, rugby,
golf, backpacking, and water
polo. Four years later,
Slaughter discovered that he
was not about to get a degree.
Furthermore, what he thought
had been a scholarship turned
out to be a government loan,
which he was expected to
repay.
The other seven athletes
who are Slaughter’s
company and director of the’
CSRA Business League, said
the news conference did not
speak to the charges that he
had received $4,500 for
administering a carpentry
program. “1 did not receive
one dime,” Johnson said.
In a later interview with The
News-Review Taylor confirmed
that Johnson received no
money.
An earlier report also said
that Bryson Wells, president of
the casket company, had been
paid SB,OOO as one of two
instructors in the training
company. Johnson said wells
has been training CETA
workers to make caskets since
co-plaintiffs in the suit tell
similar stories. Their
complaint, filed in Los Angeles
Municipal Court against CSLA
and officials, also charges other
abuses, including
under-the-table payments, use
of stand-ins to take their
exams, waiving grade
requirements and admission
standards, misuse of financial
aid checks, lack of course
plans, misrepresentation of
financial aid opportunities, and
scheduling of illegal practice
sessions.
NAACP to issue report cards
ATLANTA, Ga - Do you
know how your state senator
and representative voted last
year?
If you don’t, the Atlanta
NAACP does, and will issue
another “legislative report
card” at the end of the 1979
session, Branch President
Julian Bond said this week.
“We were surprised to discover
how seldom legislator’s
constituents knew how their
lawmakers voted,” Bond said.

James Brown
sings at
Grand Ole Opry
NASHVILLE-Soul music at
the Grand Ole Opry? Yup. And
the first to break the precedent
within those hallowed country
halls was none other than
Augusta native James Brown.
Appearing on the radio show
Saturday as the guest of
country star Porter Wagoner,
Brown belted out eight songs -
five soul and three country.
They included his 1965 hit,
“Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag”
and the more country-flavored
sounds of “Georgia On My
Mind,” “Tennessee Waltz” and
“Your Cheatin Heart.”
“I’ve always been a great
lover of country music,”
Brown said.
Wagoner called Brown “one
of the greatest entertainers of
our time” and said he was
pleased with the reception.
