WILSON
From Hollywood
The current strike in Fresno, California, is not
about Cesar Chavez and his farm laborers, but oyer
braided, long-haired musician Rick James. Our spies
report that the sounds of Rick are now seldom heard in
the fresh country air since one of Rick’s hired help
pulled a major boo-boo by informing Fresno folks
that Rick was too big to do small town personal ap
pearance promotions. In all fairness to Rick, who is
really a nice guy, we hear that he was totally unaware
of the action the hired help was taking. However, there
is no excuse for any entertainer not being aware of
what his public relations people, managers, or anyone
else he is paying, is doing and saying in his name.
We’re sure that Rick (and many others) will check it
out.
TINA TURNER BARRY WHITE OSCAR LEWIS
Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers should take
advantage of the free lessons in stage presentation that
the Dells are delivering nightly in their concerts. The
40-plus-aged gents just stand and sing without
outrageous outfits, fancy footwork or cheap gimmicks
and are enjoying standing ovations everywhere they
appear. «
Can the dancing shoes of hip shaking Tina Turner
be filled? seemed to be the question around town as
word spread that Ike Turner was ready to hit the road
again. Lots of pretty young things showed up to make
that major attempt to fill Tina’s spot.
“Highway patrolperson’’ Victor Willis, leader of
the gang known as the Village People, has stirred up
lots of confusion with his interviews with reporters.
Seems like Victor is telling the guys that the Village
People sounds are not aimed at the fast-growing gay
market. Well, who would know better than the dude
who gave the world an inside glance at the macho man,
then took the U.S. on a tour of the YMCA and now
has Uncle Sam indebted to him for naval recruitment?
The only remaining unanswered question is will Victor
and the People give equal time to the marines, army,
air force and bath houses?
That roly-poly oil rich young African seen around
Tinseltown with Oscar Lewis is definitely not the
lady’s love interest. The rumor that Oscar and actor
Adam Wade had split up was just that, a cor
nerstander’s rumor. Oscar and Adam continue to
share their Beverly Hills lovenest without friction and
the roly-poly rich one is interested in backing Oscar’s
new night club act and perhaps a television special for
the Texas beauty.
Another roly-poly man about town is the ever
popular Barry White. Barry’s latest album is so hot
that we hear it’s hard tor stores to keep the musical
genius’ labor of love on the shelf.
