—Woman's World
_ By Marian J. Waring
Warm congratulations to
Mrs. Ann Brown and Mrs.
Constance Evans on their
recent honors. You’ve
probably heard that Mrs.
Brown, a long-time leader of
the local League of Women
Voters, has been elected as its
president. This is a “first” for
our group and pays well
deserved tribute to her
outstanding leadership and
service in numerous religious
and civic activities, including
our NAACP. Her husband, Dr.
Allen Brown, is chairman of
the St. Mary’s Episcopal
Church Vestry Council.
Mrs. Evans has been
outstandingly successful in
giving guidance and counseling
to our young people at
Richmond Academy. This is
especially important during
these complex and troubled
times. Recently the Georgia
School Counselors Association
selected her as “The Guidance
Counselor of the Year” for the
Tenth District of Georgia. This
group is an arm of the Georgia
Association of Educators. She
is the first minority group
member selected for this high
and significant professional
honor.
APPRECIATION
EXPRESSED
May I take this opportunity
of thanking the many
individuals and groups for their
kindness and thoughtfulness to
me upon the passing of my
son, Paul Dumas, in St. Louis,
Missouri recently. This sad
occasion afforded opportunity
Woman out run, beaten
A 26-year-old woman was
assaulted by a man she spotted
following her on Anderson
Avenue with a stick in his hand
last Sunday morning.
The woman started running,
but was overtaken by the man
who grabbed her around the
throat and pulled her into a
nearby alley where they
fought.
The woman was screaming,
she said, that if the man

BLACK WOMEN
DISADVANTAGED
The February edition of Ms.
Magazine contains an
important article by Ms. Alexis
Herman, the brilliant young
director of the U.S.
Department of Labor Women’s
Bureau. She points out so
clearly that “Black women still
maintain their historically
higher rates of participation in
the labor force, while recently
white women show the greatest
proportional increase.” While
black women hold the highest
percentage of jobs they also
continue to suffer high rates of
unemployment, Ms. Herman
states.
Ms. Herman concluded,
“efforts that have been made
to date have not managed to
erase the uniqueness of black
women’s disadvantaged
status.”
wanted her money for him to
take her pocketbook. The man
told her repeatedly to shut up,
then a car pulled up, she said.
The man ran north through
an alley to Conklin Avenue.
The suspect was wearing a wide
brim, dark brown hat and a
long sleeve shirt which felt like
silk, the woman said.
The attacker gave no
indication of intent to rape the
woman, she reported.
This year’s meet will include
both men’s and women’s teams
from across the CSRA.
Donation is $1 per person,
$.75 if ticket is picked up in
advance at local high schools.

Kidnapped
Continued from Page 1
“I never prayed so hard in
all my life,” she said. “The
thought of escaping had been
in my mind over and over. I
was waiting for a sign from the
Lord. But, I felt a weakness in
my legs and could not support
myself,” she added.
North of Statesboro they
ran into a road block. There
were two uniformed officers at
the road block and another
man helping them, Ms. Baker
said. The only cars on the road
were the one the officers had, a
northbound car they had
stopped and Ms. Baker’s.
“He slowed down, looked
the men right in the face and
just kept on going,” Ms. Baker
said. One of the men said
“whoa, whoa,” she said, but
they did not take down the
license number nor pursue.
“They just turned around
and started back talking,” she
said.
As they continued Ms. Baker
tried to make conversation.
“We talked about church and
all, but 1 was too afraid to talk
too much about right and
wrong,” Ms. Baker said. “I
thought that just being kind to
him would help. He needed
somebody to talk to him and
he definitely has a problem.”
Beyond Statesboro, Gibbs
stopped, cleared the trunk and
put Ms. Baker in it. “It was
dark when I got out of the
trunk,” she said, “and we were
on Interstate 16 West.”
In Jacksonville, Fla. Gibbs
stopped to make a phone call
and a recording said the
number was disconnected, Ms.
Baker said. He told her he
knew a man who was
mafia-connected and could get

him overseas in a few weeks.
The man was expected to be
there for a few weeks.
They continued on to St.
Augustine, where they stopped
at a station with diesel fuel.
When Gibbs turned to pay the
attendant, Ms. Baker “just
opened the door and got out.”
“He grabbed my shirt, but 1
jerked away and screamed,”
she said.
When Ms. Baker screamed
her captor sped away. The
attendant, a woman, got a
good look at him and Ms.
Baker told her about her
predicament. Local authorities
were contacted. Both women
filed reports that Saturday
afternoon and Ms. Baker later
filed one in Augusta
Wednesday.
A private detective had been
hired by Ms. Baker’s fiance
only hours after she was
abducted on Friday, and a
missing persons report filed
with the Augusta Police
Department. Ms. Baker’s ordeal
lasted 21 hours, and occurred
one month, exactly, before her
wedding date.
Gibbs is still at large in
Florida, but authorites there
have a statewide lookout for
him.
Gibbs is wanted by North
Carolina authorities. He told
Ms. Baker that he was
21-years-old and that he would
never return to prision or be
taken back, and that she could
tell the police that if he did his
“toe would be tagged.” Ms.
Baker said he laughed when she
asked what that meant, and
explained that “he would be
dead.”

BELIEVES ITS
GOOD BUSINESS
FOR EVERYONE
Doctors become interns at hospitals, learning from
more experienced doctors. Why shouldn’t students in
business administration learn the same way?
Procter & Gamble believes they can and offers an eight
week 'internship” each summer at company head
quarters in Cincinnati, Ohio to as many as twenty
college juniors.
Each student lives and works in the corporate
environment, learning from P&G managers in Finance
and Accounting. Purchasing and Traffic, Market
Research, Management Systems, Field Offices,
Advertising, Sales and Employment.
In addition to practical work experience, each intern
receives round-trip travel expenses and a weekly
salary from P&G. Students are 'recommended for the
program by an official of the college they attend.
Participating colleges include Central State, Fisk,
Florida AfrM, Jackson State. Morehouse, Morgan State,
Norths Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, Tennessee
State and Xavier of New Orleans.
Summer internships—one of the many ways in which
Procter & Gamble is supporting the development and
improvement of higher education.
