The Outspoken
JIZ T CRAIG

From Hollywood
Pat Hodges walked away from the Hodges, James and
Smith trio a few months ago to try her wings solo and
started a new trend. Jessica M. Smith is now burning the
midnight oil in preparation for her first solo album.
Danita James is also gathering material for her first duet
album without the girls and cornerstanders say that
Wayne Duncan may be the man teamed with her.
Folks are wondering why Stevie Wonder reportedly
paid so much more money for that radio station than was
the original asking price?
Tinseltown’s chic little secretary with the five-hundred
dollar blouses and seven mink coats up and disappeared
when she read in our column that both her employer and
the police were on her trail. We are sure she will pop up
again in another city with a man of means.
Max Julien who starred in the film The Mack placed an
ad in a local paper seeking dancers for his new film,
Danger Man. Max was surprised and swamped by the
more than one thousand volunteers who showed up to
boogie and shake their groove thing. Being a smart man
Max immediately made other arrangements, obtained a
larger hall and will use the many beautiful faces and
bodies in a giant nightclub scene.

KELLEE PATTERSON BOBBY WOMACK VERNEE WATSON
Kellee Patterson was called back from a much needed
vacation to help with the recutting and remixing of her
new tune, “Let Go, Let Go” when the tune hit the disco
market like a tornado. Producers are now concerned be
cause the trucking strike is delaying the shipping of thous
ands of copies of the new twelve-inch record.
While Kellee fled into the night to continue her
vacation, her producer Gene Russell was playing a mean
piano in a Sunset Strip jazz club. Gene and a few other
jazz heavyweights just walked in and put together a
musical evening that had the barstanders begging for
more. Now Gene is being asked to take time out from his
own firm and cut an album starring jazzman Gene
Russell.
Television star Vernee Watson inked a pact to star in a
film titled Love's Savage Fury. No, it is not a rehashed old
Tarzan flick, but about a runaway slave who is imprisoned
and later has her former female owner as a cellmate.
Sounds like a great plot for a heavy knock down, drag out
cat fight.
Word from our Jackson, Mississippi, spy that the Black
disc jockey’s meeting was a success and the boys are ready
to retrench and bring back the Black music of yesteryear.
Their audiences are unhappy with rock and heavy disco
and are requesting more Bobby Womack, 8.8. King, Ray
Charles, etc. Looks like we will soon be able to tell a Black
radio station from a white radio station on Saturday night
once more.
Rumor hazit that the person or persons unknown (to
this columnist) who attacked that San Francisco record
executive with a baseball bat would be wise to take up resi

whereabouts are known to a couple of his very angry and

Soldier robs woman
Police are investigating the
report by an Augusta woman
that a Fort Gordon soldier
threatened her life, drove off in
her car, and robbed her on May
1, they said.
Although the case is listed
“stranger to stranger,”
suggesting that the woman did
not know her assailant, the
victim, Teresa Stevens, gave
the soldiers name, rank and
batallion. She said that on
Tuesday morning, shortly after
midnight, the soldier asked her
to take him to the post.
But when she told him she
did not have enough gas in her
car, he took a knife out of his

Mr. James Williams of

NEW YORK - Over 300
black religious leaders and lay
representatives from 100 cities
around the country, meeting
here recently in a three-day
Summit Conference, differed
vehemently with Dr. Leon
Sullivan and his plan for
improving conditions for
blacks in South Africa.
His position was rejected by
speaker after speaker, including
Jesse Jakcson, Kelly Miller
Smith of Nashville, Johnstone
Makatini, permanent
representative of the Afr ic an
National Conference;
Ambassador Draman Quattaro,
Organization of African Unity
representative to the United
Nations.
The Rev. Wyatt Tee Walker,
secretary-genera 1 of
International Freedom
Mobilization; Canon Burgess
Carr, secretary-general of
All-African Conference of
Churches; Ambassador Paul
Lusaka of Zambia; and Dr.
Joseph E. Lowery, president of
the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference.
Dr. Sullivan argued that the
blacks in South Africa would
be considerably worse off it
U.S. businesses in South Africa
pulled out. He said his plan
calls for fair employment
practices and improved
working and living conditions
for blacks. And he said further
that if the American firms do
not begin to improve working
conditions there, he, too,
would demand a pull out.
But the church leaders
insisted that the situation in

and Mrs. Herbert Butler,

Sadie M. Cross and her sons,
Leroy, Jonnie, Levon, Jerry,
Audri and Wayne, all of
South Africa had already gone
beyond the endurance of
blacks, with no possibility of
compromise by the white
supremancist regime. Some
said the Sullivan plan was
doing more harm than good.
Jesse Jackson called for a
stepped up boycott of the sale
of South African Krugerrand
gold coins as a form of protest;
and Rev. Walker suggested that
Children’s Day each year
become our Rally Day against
apartheid.
