Phillip Randolph leaves
‘estate’ of 500 dollars
A. Phillip Randolph, who
died last month at the age of
90, left little more in the way
of a legacy his integrity, fuel to
keep the fight for racial
equality and the enduring hope
that race would cease to be a
factor in the total unification
of his country.
The ideals that kept
Randolph at the head of the
civil rights movement for half a
century far and above exceed
the real property that he left
behind.
His close associate and
director of the institute that
bears his name, Bayard Rustin,
said that Randolph’s “estate”
amounted to a mere SSOO.
It is a fitting legacy for the
man who revolutionized
organized labor when he
overcame intense company
opposition and established the
Brotherhood of Sleeping Car
Porters, the first black union.
It was Randolph with a
handful of other Black leaders,
Mary McCleod Bethune,
Madame CJ. Walker, Dr.
Marjorie Joyner and others
who brought industrial titan
George Pullman to his knees
and gained recognition for
sleeping car porters, men who
served but couldn’t ride in
Pullmans as passengers.

It was Randolph who stood
toe-to-toe with President
Franklin D. Roosevelt in the
1930 s and, with firm dignity,
demanded that he issue an
executive order to ban racial
discrimination ip federal, jobs.
Roosevelt knew Rdh’doTph as
“the most dangerous Negro” in
America, yet,
with the irinate Wiidom and
reasonableness of Randolph’s
demand, he issued the order.
It was. ithf same Randolph
who backed President
Harry S. Truman into a corner
with a demand that racial
discrimination be banned in
the U.S. armed forces.
Truman buckled and bent.
The result was another
executive order which, on
paper, ended racial
discrimination in all branches
of the military.
No American president saw
fit to honor Randolph in life.
Only one took time to eulogize
him in death.
Jimmy Carter joined
hundreds of other mourners at
a memorial service for
Randolph at Washington’s
Metropolitan AME Church.
The president said Randolph
was “a man of constant
idealism who...contributed to
the making of a new nation.”
