Rev. Franklin worsens
Four held in connection with shooting
By William Silberg
(Pittsburg Courier)
DETROIT - Police said they
had arrested four men and
were seeking two others in the
shooting of the Rev. Clarence
L. Franklin, a civil rights leader
and father of singer Aretha
Franklin.
Franklin was shot twice at
his home early Sunday and still
is in a comatose condition at
Henry Ford Hospital with
bullet wounds of the groin and
knee.
Police Chief William Hart
said at a news conference
warrants had been issued
against three of the suspects --
Patrick W. Thompson, 23;
Howard A. Woodard, 24; and
his brother James E. Woodard,
26, all of Detroit.
A fourth suspect, George
Harris, 25, also of Detroit, was
being held but warrants had
not been issued against him,
Hart said.
Hart said two other men
were still being sought.
However, he said, “We feel we
have the principals in this case
in custody.”
Thompson and the Woodard
brothers were named in
warrants charging them with
assault with intent to commit
murder, breaking and entering
and possession of a firearm in
the commission of a felony.

News of the shoot.ng spread
rapidly and drew a deluge of
calls from across the country
to New Bethel Baptist Church,
where the father of soul singer
Aretha Franklin has been
pastor for 33 years. Locally,
the influx of calls and visitors
at Ford Hospital caused
hospital authorites to issue a
public plea that the calls be
stopped.
Aretha, her husband Clynn
Turman and brother Cecil,
arrived here Monday from Las
Vegas to join the other two
Franklin children, Erma and
Carolyn, at their father’s
