Killer sentenced
The iury retired at at 11:44
Saturday morning and returned
at 1:15, the jury said its
foreman said: “We the jury
find the penalty as death”.
During Saturday’s
testimony, defendant Stephens
told the court, “ I really didn’t
mean to shoot him, 1 intended
to give him my gun, but he
shot at me, so I had to protect
myself’.
Stephens said he was
“mistreated” while in the
county jail, because he was
black and because he “killed a
cop”.

Stephens introduced records
showing he was convicted in
1964 for assulting a man with
intent to murder, along, with
six cases of auto theft. He was
sentenced in 1971 to six years
in prison for burglary.
Stephens said the assault
charge was made when he shot
another man who was
attacking him with a straight
razor. He said he admit to the
charge when tried on the auto
theft charges, but said he
didn’t know he was admitting
guilt to the charges of

aggravated assault-with intent
to muder.
Stephens, when questioned
by D.A. Allen responded “You
aggravate the jury ... you
change the story, you pretend
that you said everything,
You’re • not God, you weren’t
there; but you’re good, you’re,
good, you convinced the jury it
was the other way around”.
“If God wanted me dead, I
would have been killed when
they were shooting at me,”
Stephens said.
Mrs. Carrie Stephens, the
defendant’s mother also
testified Saturday, saying her
boy was “always a good boy”
who never fought much and
helped her around the house.”
I don’t see why they (jury)
should sentence my son to
death.”
She was escorted from the
courtroom after breaking
down.

to ask the jury for mercy,
“Allen said. “Were asking the
death penalty because it’s
fair.”
Defense attorney, in closing
said, “I’m going to plea for this%
man’s-life because I think it’s
worth saving. Death is tragic
under any circumstances - but
you can’t bring someone
back,“Wilkerson said.” We
think the evidence shows it
was self-defense and it’s
possible Kenny Stephens’
testimony is true.”
Stephens remained calm
when die sentence was
rendered. Judge Pickett told
Stephens: “May the Lord have
mercy on your soul.”
Stephens is scheduled to be
electrocuted between the hours
of 10a.m. and 2p.m. on April 9.

Man’s head blown off,
suicide is suspected
Suicide is suspected in the
death of a young man believed
to be a Fort Gordon soldier
whose head was blown off last
week. An exploded grenade is
believed to have caused the
death, officials said.
The identity of the man is
still not known, but Richmond
County Sheriffs Investigator
Ronnie H. Strength said,
“We’re expecting some
information any time” on
fingerprints taken from the
body for comparison with
army records.
Richmond County
investigators answered the call
just before seven p.m. after
three soldiers discovered the
partially blown-up house on
the 2300 block of Naples
Drive.

Inside, officers found the
unknown black man clad in an
army uniform with his head
missing. The walls of the living
room were scarred by
fragments of the grenade.
Neighbors said they recalled
hearing an explosion between
nine and ten a.m. but thought
it came from Fort Gordon.
The explosion burst
windows in the rear of the
home where the victim was

Man shot to death

have yet been made in
connection with the fatal
shooting of an elderly Jackson
service station owner last
Wednesday morning in an
apparent robbery, authorites
say.
However, lawmen in S.C.
issued an all-points bulletin for
John Carl Bentley, 24, last
Friday morning, believed
armed and dangerous, Sheriff

Fate Taylor, 60, owner and
operator of the Hill Top
Service Station since 1952, was
shot twice in the back during
an apparent armed robbery at
around 6 pun. “An
undetermined amount of
money was taken during the
incident,” Grant said.
Taylor was found by a
neighbor, Preston Biddle, who
told authorities he stepped
outside his home early last
Wednesday to look at a
thermometer when he heard
the victim yelling for help.
Aiken County deputies
responded to the call, but
Taylor died before they could
arrive at the scene.
Councilman
sentenced
WARRENTON, Ga. -
Charles O. Logan, Warrenton’s
first black city councilman,
was sentenced recently to three
weekends in jail after he
pleaded no contest in the U.S.
District Court in Augusta to
submitting “fraudulent and
false documents” to the
Internal Revenue Service.
He was accompanied by
his attorney, John H. Ruffin
Jr., when he entered his plea.
Logan was also placed on a
two-year probation and
ordered to make restitution to
the IRS for all taxes, penalties
and interest.
Logan is principal of the
Warrenton Elementary School.
