Conventional asphalt shingles usually have a life expectancy of 15 years, but Johns-Manville backs its fiber glass shingles with a 20-25 year limited prorated warranty. The tough qualities of as phalt have been valued since Noah used it to waterproof his ark. In more modern times, as phalt has been used as the key ingredient in the shin gles which cover America's homes. And from this tradi tional asphalt shingle, a new generation of roofing prod ucts has been born fiber glass shingles. Indeed, these modern products are causing an American roofing revolu tion! Each year more con sumers are turning to fiber glass to cover their homes. What is this new shingle that everyone’s talking a bout? “Basically, we've taken the conventional asphalt shingle and made it better,” says Edward A. Reilly, mer chandising managing for roofing products at Johns- Manville. The difference, says Reilly, is the base or mat —of the shingle. Conventional asphalt shin gles have an organic base of wood fiber and waste paper. J-M, pioneers in the develop ment of fiber glass shingles, replaced the organic mat with inorganic, rot-resistant fiber glass under a heavy weather-proof asphalt coat. Consequently, these new products can endure severe climate extremes. Being more durable than conven tional asphalt shingles, they also last longer. Most organ ic-based asphalt shingles have a life-expectancy of 15 years, while fiber glass shin gles are designed to last 20- 25 years. Most important, fiberglass shingles provide excellent fire protection. That's why Underwriters Laboratories has given them its highest fire-resistance rating Class A. This compares with the most conventional asphalt shingles. In consumer "focus groups” across the country, consum ers were enthusiastic about fiber glass shingles. And, they were pleased to learn that they weren't limited in style and color selection. Johns-Manville, for exam ple, has four shingle styles ranging from the tradi tional square cut three-tab design to a distinctive three dimensional laminated de sign. Os all the colors they offer, J-M says homeowners tend to lean toward the newer earthtone shades. “It’s simple," says J-M's Reilly. “Consumers want products that look good and last a long time. That's why sales of fiber glass shingles have doubled in just the past few years.” Predicting that sales will continue to escalate, J-M has begun converting all its conventional asphalt shingle plants to fiber glass shingle production. "We believe that fiber glass based shingles are the single most important roofing development to come along in our lifetime," con cludes Reilly. The study was done by the Georgia Department of Human Resources after naturally-oc curring radiation was discovered in the Alamo, Ga., water supply through testing by the Department of Natural Resources’ Environmental Protection Division. Natural radiation in excess of federal standards poses the possibility of the increased occurrence of cancer. According to Dr. James W. Alley, director of the Human Resources department’s Division of Physical Health, the death rate study was based on statistics from 1971 through 1979. In the under 45 age category, Wheeler County’s cancer death rate was 10.9 per 100,000. In the same age group, the nationwide death rate from cancer for the same period was 16 per 100,000. Library Story Hour A story hour for children of school age is held each Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Maxwell Branch Library, 1927 Lumpkin Road. PROGRAMS FOR PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN Programs are planned for pre-school children who are old enough to enjoy books. A Pre-School Story Hour will be held at the Appleby Branch, 2260 Walton Way, on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Pre-School Story Hours at the Wallacd Branch, 1237 Laney-Walker Blvd., are scheduled on Monday through Friday at 10:30 and 11 a.m. DIAL-A-STORY Through the courtesy of the Telephone Pioneers of Augusta and the Public Library, children may dial 724-8080 at any hour of the day or night and hear a story or poem told by a member of the Children’s Department staff. "To mourn a mischief that is past and gone is the next way to draw new mischief on." Shakespeare in the 45 to 59-year-old age group, the Wheeler County death rate from cancer was 160.9 per 100,000, while the United States’ average for the same age group was 235 cancer deaths per 100,000. Older Wheeler Countians, however, suffered a cancer death rate higher than the national average - 872.8 deaths per 100,000 were reported in Wheeler County compared with national average of 825 per 100,000. Alley said the study looked at death statistics over the nine year period in order to obtain a sample large enough to be statistically valid. He said the results indicate that residents of Alamo, the Wheeler County seat, need not fear continued use of town water supplies while a new radiation-free well is being drilled. Use of bottled water by pregnant women and infants under one year old is still recommended as a precaution, however, Alley said.
