Shirley Jones
Celebration held
The Rev. Andrew Johnson,
pastor of the First Mt. Moriah
Baptist Church, will celebrate
his fifth anniversary on the
first Sunday in April at 2:30
p.m. The Rev. Clyde Hill and
the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church
will be in charge.
Shirley Jones speaks
'Gumption 9 sparks great deeds
“For my thoughts are not
your thoughts, neither are your
ways my ways. For as the
heavens are higher than the
earth, so are my ways higher
than your ways, and my
thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isiah 55:8-9.
The dictionary defines
“gumption” as courage, spunk,
guts. It is a quality that is, or at
least used to be a distinctive
characteristic of Americans.
“Git up and git” my
grandmother called it. A
sagacious 19th Century
Frenchman who write
“Democracy in America” gave
this illustration of it.
“These Americans,” he
wrote, “are the most peculiar
people on earth. You will not
believe it when I tell you how
they act. In a local community
a citizen may conceive of some
need which is not being met.
What does he do? He goes
\ The Augusta News-Review - March 29, 1980 -
across the street and talks with
his neighbor. Then what
happens? A committee is
formed and begins functioning
on behalf of that need. You
will not believe this but this is
true. All this is done by private
citizens on their owr>
initiative.”
Such is our American
heritage! Such is the quality of
character that built our nation
and made it great. It is what
motivates a person to tackle
things that have never been
done before; to dare to

examine new ideas; to put his
mind to developing better ways
of doing things; to undertake
projects other people doubt
can be done. Such is your
heritage. So if you’ve got a
good idea, do something about
it. Don’t think it can’t amount
to much just because it is
yours. Ideas, like babies, don’t
choose to whom they are bom.
What is important is the idea,
not who has it.
Thought: “Work out your
own salvation with fear and
trembling.”
