The funds will be used to

Dr. Scott. Belk has a special

programs at area schools and
colleges.

athletic programs are a means
to bring people together. “My
father thought athletics, more
than most other things, is a
common denominator that has
helped to bridge the gap
between the races over the
years,” Howard said.
“Interpersonal relationships
developed through athletics are
keys to good relations
regionally and nationally,”
Howard added.
Paine College Athletic
Director Robert Eskew, agrees
with Howard about the
benefits of athletics. “Athletics
is the one common bond in our
society that brings different
races together to work toward
a common goal,” Eskew said.
“If this kind of positive
activity could be applied to
daily situations, race relations
would not be a problem
today,” he added.
The Belk donation will be
used to fund an athletic
scholarship at Paine College
according to Eskew.

Not for military only
The Army Continuing
Education System (ACES)
offers a broad range of
programs from basic education
to masters degrees. For active
military, retired military,
dependents and Fort Gordon
employes, at little or not cost
to the student.
ACES has two divisions to
meet specific needs. One
division emphasizes the formal
classroom atmosphere, and the
other, a self paced program.
LEARNING CENTERS
The Learning Center is
geared toward the ’’self-paced”
program. The Learning Centers
are designed to aid the
individual that wants to
improve but finds it impossible
to attend regular classes. The
student chooses his own classes
and his own schedule.
The Learning Centers
operation enables the
individual to begin a program
at his convenience.
